This is not your parents’ Johnny Mathis Christmas album—it’s not even your older sister’s pop-stars-sing-traditional-Christmas-songs CD. It’s a set of brand-new original, hilarious, touching, and rocking holiday music that will forge a new tradition in holiday music.
From the leadoff track “Chimney Sneak” by Nicholas Markos—a hooky gem reminiscent of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night”—through to Mark Robinson’s (of Unrest fame) hypnotic “Merry Christmas,” this is a tour-de-force that blows the lid off your expectations of holiday music. Along the way you’ll groove to Howie Kantoff’s James Brown workout “Eight Days (A Hannukah Song),” turn up the volume for the riotous Christmas rap “Gangsta Claus”, stomp your foot to the swampy Delta Blues of Old Chickenhead’s “Santa Claus, Santa Claus,” and be touched by Jim Germain’s plaintive “Chimney Song.” Other notable contributors include Ralph Covert (of Ralph’s World), Jordan, Jason Fickel, Bolo, and Anthus Web.
The “Reindeer” series of original holiday-music compilations was started by Tie Records International founder Marcos Sueiro when, as a college student, he found himself in snowy Michigan, rather than his native Spain, for Christmas. Challenging a few friends to come up with new ideas for ways to sing about the holidays, the series of annual cassette tapes grew in breadth and quality, and Reindeer Buffet is the star at the top of the tree. As always, the profits from this Reindeer release will benefit charity (Oxfam).
