San Francisco native Nancie de Ross has collaborated with Pete Townshend, Elliot Mazer, Chris Isaak guitarist (James Calvin Wilsey), Clive Gregson, Chuck Prophet and Grammy winning songwriters Phil Galdston and Jon Lind.
Nancie has performed with Tom Waits, Chris Isaak, Todd Rundgren, Brian Setzer, Radney Foster, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and The Everly Brothers. Nancie has received Billboard''s Award Of Excellence for her original song "I Get Burned" as well as the NCSA Merit Award for her composition "Today''s James."
Nancie''s original tune "Let That Girl Love You" can be heard in the Warner Brothers television show "Change of Heart." Also her song "Fallen Angels'' was placed in the hit television show C.S.I.
Nancie has been described as the "female Chris Isaak" and her song writing likened to that of Tom Waits. Her songs are a rich blend of Americana - folk and contemporary country with a twist of West Coast jazz musical phrasing.
De Ross began playing guitar and writing songs at the age of seven. She attended The San Francisco Conservatory Of Music but chose to leave after two years to pursue life on the road and in the recording studio. Her work with James Calvin Wilsey, lead guitarist for Chris Isaak, influenced greatly her writing and recording styles.
"I remember when I was 15 years old I met Jimmy at a club in the Mission district of San Francisco. I think it was called the Firehouse Seven. After my show Jimmy came up to me and handed me a metronome and said ''now use it!'' Jimmy was my mentor very early on. He helped me hone my writing and performing skills. He had tremendous confidence in me and was very hip and stylish. He remains one of my favorite guitar players and producers."
Nancie''s early vocal and song influences were Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Sr., Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker.
"These were the records my mother and father would listen to constantly. While the other kids were playing "Boston" and "Journey" I was spinning Frank Sinatra. Needless to say I was never appointed the girl who spins the record discs at slumber parties. For me it was always about the sounds coming off the hi-fi. I was always focused on the vocal phrasing, the timing, the emotion."
"Later on as a teenager I discovered "The Who" and was fortunate enough to meet and correspond with Pete Townshend. After listening to every "Who" recording I could lay my hands on I began to venture into more aggressive rhythm patterns on the guitar and writing about all that teen angst. My vocal style became more aggressive and filled with a deep lonesome quality. I loved Pete''s songs because they were not your normal fare delivered by over sexed macho Rock N'' Roll dudes. He wrote about interpersonal struggle, the desire to learn and ultimate redemption. I found that appealing... that in 2 minutes and 50 seconds a character in a song can go from sin and struggle to redemption. Pretty cool stuff, really."
Nancie continues to tour the United States and has played such prestigious venues as San Francisco''s legendary Fillmore Auditorium, The Warfield Theater and The Great American Music Hall. She has also played Nashville''s Bluebird Cafe , and performed on both West Coast Live Radio with host Sedge Thompson and eTown Live in Boulder, Colorado.
Her original composition "I Don''t Know Why" can be heard in the Jeff Goldblum Miramax film "Fathers And Sons." The song has recently been recorded by the late John Denver''s wife Cassandra Delaney Denver. To hear Cassandra''s version click here.
Nancie has participated in many charity events throughout her career and can be heard performing her song "Looking For A Reason" on the Project Open Hand CD "Acoustic Music Project."
Ms. de Ross has been featured in Spin, GIG, Dirty Linen, Sing Out, and Electronic Musician Magazines. Nancie continues to perform live and has just released her first CD titled "Rome." She is currently working on a children''s CD titled "Wonderland: Children''s Songs From Our Collective Past." She is currently developing material for her second CD tentatively titled "Colorful Language." New songs include the raucous "Whiskey, Rum, Brandy and Beer" as well as the contemporary country/pop hit "Run Little Darlin." Nancie is in the early stages of writing material for another recording project: "Are We There Yet?" Songs written for those long, long drives touring or just camping with the family. "My father used to put a quarter on the dashboard for every hour that passed while we were driving that I would not ask him "are we there yet?" You know when your a kid and it just seems to take forever to get anywhere! It''s a fun idea. The majority of the material is fun, satirical and light hearted. It has been an interesting project to work on."
