Exploring a musical genre uncommon on the east coast, Negative J brings together a myriad of musical styles to produce a unique style of heavy rock that has been compared to the intellectual intensity of Tool and the emotional grit of Alice in Chains. Powerful rhythms overlaid by dark guitar tones accentuate the often ethereal vocal presence of frontman Chainsaw.
Hailing from Charlottetown, PE, the band coalesced in 2001 and began creating intelligent, melodic, heavy music. Negative J''s most proud achievement occurred recently when they were chosen as the first winner of the Summer of Judgement contest organized by Canadian rockers Finger Eleven. This gave the band the privilege to open for Finger Eleven at the first concert of their Canadian tour! The band has also earned a strong following through independent performance and has complimented Eastern Canada''s heaviest acts, as well as Ontario''s Blurtonia and GASH. Live shows are intense and energetic, offering a musical experience that is engaging, cerebral and memorable.
Each of the five members has considerable experience in the local music scene, and fuse a variety of musical influences into the unmistakable sound that is Negative J. This unique sound gained the attention of the Provincial Department of Community and Cultural Affairs who generously funded a portion of the cost to record the first full length album, Nexus (released March 2004).
The band has enjoyed success on the local level, winning studio time, band battles and performing at some of the region''s larger musical festivals (most recently - Tumbleweed Festival). Future plans include touring to support the album and securing distribution and management. The band will also continue to evolve, pursuing the goal that initially brought its members together - creating great music.
