WHAT LIES BENEATH - CD NUMBER 5! - In a break with my usual two year gestation period, here’s my fifth CD “What Lies Beneath” hot on the heels of last years “Chase The Sun”. Late 2007 and early 2008 found me in a prolific but reflective mood and here are the results. If you liked the last four CD’s you wont be disappointed, if you didn’t you will.

1) RISING TIDE

This was the first track I wrote for the CD back in May 2007. It’s a mix of acoustic and electric guitars. A kind of Steve Oliver / Peter White meets Dave Gilmour / Thomas Blug. There’s even a bit of backward guitar on the outro.

2) HEARTBREAK

A simple short ballad inspired by the most excellent Paul Gilbert. It was written and recorded over two days on the 16th and 17th July 2008.

3) I’M BEGGING YOU

Myself and Cathy from Eclipse sing the phrase “I’m Begging You” ( ad nausea some may say). This started life as a simple short song but then mutated over a couple of months into an 8 minute monster with a long outro.

4) PRIMA DONNA

Another song clocking in at 5 min 16 sec written early in 2007 with an acoustic / electric mix.

5) IN A LONELY PLACE

The opening chords were inspired by listening to Glenn Hughes. I was looking for a “Coast to Coast” type Trapeze intro. It’s medium paced at 92bpm, stop yawning. Some guitar harmonies on the first solo, pinched harmonics and feedback on the second.

6) DEJA VOODOO

A 12 bar (ish) tune in A minor. All the guitar parts are recorded with a Fender Strat. I was going for a Thomas Blug tone, not quite there yet but he’s got a 61 Strat. However it’s got a bit more of a slappy / twangy edge going on than normal for me. Another with a longish guitary outro.

7) AMERICAN SMILE

Blah, blah, blah - wah, wah, wah - Here’s a happy tune with a bit of wah-wah in amongst the wallowing self pity evident on the rest of the songs. This tune was inspired by my smiley smiley my space friends - check them out.

8) WHAT LIES BENEATH

This version has an electric piano backing, the organ version which I also recorded, sounded a bit like a funeral march so it’s consigned to my PC for ever, unless it resurrected for my funeral.

9) MOSTLY SUMMER

Another happyish vibe (what’s going on!). The intro is sprinkled with harmonics.

10) DEEP IN MY HEART

Built around the phrase “Deep in my heart”

11) WHATS GOOD (ABOUT GOODBYE)

Like a few of my tunes I had the title first. I wasn’t sure about this when I first recorded it but it’s grown on me.

12) LEAVING

I had the chorus chord progression of C / Cmaj7 / C7 / F / Fminor used in this song floating around for a while. This track features a Yamaha Acoustic and a Fender Strat, not an Ibanez in sight. They should have sponsored me when they had the chance!

13) WISH AWAY EACH DAY

The title comes from a line in a Porcupine Tree song. It’s another longish one I’m afraid.

14) HEAD FOR HOME

This track was written and recorded in one day. It reminded me of “Local Hero” and heading back to home after being away - hence the title. It’s a simple verse / chorus / verse tune with no solo.
