Details:
Boreas was born as a folk band and grew up weird. Originally called Grandpa Moses, the band won the popular choice award in the 2007 Tucson Battle of the Bands, then set out to write and record a full-length album. Over the course of two years, the band learned home recording from the ground up – threw out many times more material than ever ended up on the record – and became much more than just a folk band. They absorbed influences from Björk to The Books, from Animal Collective to Grizzly Bear, and ended up with an album that covers ground from bleak acoustic folk (the title track) to musique concrète (The Sport of Birds) to balls-to-the-wall guitar rock ((taos hum)) to bizarre imagist tribalism (Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes). A vibrant sonic world is there for you to explore.

The album was recorded in houses and beneath underpasses; late at night in rooms left unlocked; under the open sky, inside a shower, and on the catwalk of a concert hall. Behind the music are captured crickets and night sounds, atmospheric chatterings, clicks, barely-heard voices, and the sound of gentle breathing. It is music alive with the noise of living.

Since releasing the album, Boreas has been performing all over Southern Arizona with a constantly changing roster of players and instrumentation. They recently gave an improvised percussion concert using a home-built conical xylophone and bass drum, a trash can and an electric fan, and have performed several times in support of fellow Tucson musicians Nöma (including a tour of Arizona''s major cities). The summer of 2009 will see them back in the studio, this time staying in a single room in Chicago with experimental recordist Theo Karon and his increasing collection of melodic scrap metal. The present is bright, but the future is blinding!
