No Second Troy came together through friends in 2003. Guitarist Tom McCarthy: "I was looking for a group that was willing to push rock a little bit, not be afraid to play stuff that might seem a little out of bounds, and build on some of the music that I love." It didn''t take many practices with Shanker, McGee, and Beach to know that things were happening. Pianist Mike Beach: "We had enough in common - we all had played in jazz groups, and liked a lot of the same rock bands - but not too much, so it felt like we were building something new." The Washington City Paper music classifieds then lent a hand. Singer Jeff Wharen, returning from three years in Korea, showed up for practice one night with a beat up guitar case covered with stickers from around the world. McCarthy: "At the end of the night, I said to Jeff, ''This could be something good.''" With Wharen''s versatile voice offering shades of Rob Thomas and Adam Duritz as it flowed from strong to more atmospheric, and supported by the subtle harmonies of McCarthy and Beach, the sound came together instrumentally around the piano, acoustic guitar, bass and drums, with electric guitar, organ, keys, and other strange sounds filling in spaces and providing layers. Wharen: "It was luck to run into these guys. Ultimately, what makes it worth it is people who just like hanging out together musically and otherwise."
