Details:
Joel Limpic is an artist/musician who was born in California, grew up in Brazil, and ended up landing in Oklahoma City a few years ago. He’s released a few independent projects over the last few years, each providing a unique snapshot of a season in his life and those around him.

The most recent project released is called “Pilgrimage”. Recorded by Don Chaffer (Waterdeep, Khrusty Brothers) in Kansas City and then mixed and mastered by veteran Chuck Zwicky (Prince, Delirious?), each song artfully explores our journey through this turbulent life with those around us. It leads you through an array of themes like abandonment, doubt, hope, identity, and faith. It features the musical participation of a large group of friends including Brad Kilman and Charlie Hall.

To follow is a story describing some of the thoughts surrounding “Pilgrimage”:

“HOW TO FOLD AN ORIGAMI CRANE”
We’re all born into pilgrimage, from the day our lungs first fill with air till our last gasping breath. We begin wide-eyed as we take in as much beauty as our little eyes can handle. Everything surrounding is a miracle, from the single blade of grass reaching upward to the luminous moon faithfully reminding us of her brother. They each offer us a window, a glimpse, a small reminder of the home we lost and are desperately looking for.

Just as soon as we’re overcome with beauty, we’re also overwhelmed with a sense that this beautiful co-exists with a much darker existence. A poisoned water well. A body that turns on itself. Creation striking creation. This pervading darkness perverts and distorts these visions of home, and even cause us to wonder if there is a home at all. Yet we hear murmurs of this new kingdom coming, not just far away but one that touches earth, that meets us on our path. Though real, the sirens blaring around us remind us all the more that we are not yet home, increasing our aching for the day they’ll be silenced, finally drowned out by a new laughter and a truer singing.

So with every tragedy penned on the pages of our hearts, we learn that a new story can be written right from that where that failure ended. With the help of others, we take the paper into our hands and begin to crease. Each fold tells of a step, a prayer. One fold leads to the next. Misshapen throughout, but emerging beautiful. A wing appears, then another. A tail. A beak. A crane.

Isn’t that our pilgrimage? Folding and praying. Journeying and wrestling. Descent and weeping. Ascent and breathing. Overcoming and becoming. We learn to live as “kingdom comes” in the here and now. Discovering we’re not alone, that someone has walked the path before us, and walks it with us. At the end of the journey we open our heart’s suitcase, only to find it filled with stories of redemption. Every tragedy somehow has been folded into a majestic bird. The cranes of hope sing louder and colors emerge brighter. This is our pilgrimage.
