Details:
TVP Records moved its operations to the Boston area five years ago from Minneapolis, when Sir Buck moved back to his hometown. While in Minneapolis, he produced Vanguard, a multi-award winning band in the thriving Twin Cities music scene. Vanguard was a regular guest at Prince''s Glam Slam and the famed First Avenue nightclub, where they routinely played on bills with legendary acts such as P-Funk, The Time and Rick James. They also performed within the underground hip-hop/acid-jazz movement that spawned Atmosphere. The band’s CD “Play” was nominated for a Minnesota Music Award for R&B Album of the Year alongside national heavy-hitters Prince, Johnny Lang and Mint Condition.

“When I first moved back, I was focusing on working in Real Estate with the family business, and music became a side project. I was still producing, but it was with artists living in other parts of the country,” said Sir Buck. Lifelong friend and collaborator Eric “Big Fuzz” Gregoire then moved back to the area from New York City and he and Sir Buck decided they had to give the local music scene a shot.

“Growing up around here, we were well aware that it was primarily singer/songwriters, Jazz cats, and Rock cover bands. We quickly realized hip-hop had finally made it’s way to the Northeast suburbs, some of it really good.... some a bit cartoon-ish. We weren’t too optimistic about finding musicians that were into contemporary music, but also shared our love for classic Funk, Soul & Hip-Hop. Then we started hearing about this band The Press Project. We checked them out and what they were doing reminded me a lot of the scene I had been part of in the late 90’s in Minneapolis. Once I connected with Ro Diggs (Roland Nicol, bass player for The Press Project), the ideas just started to flow. We set up a weekly recording session and gradually all the cats from his band started coming by. It was really an easy process, these guys have talent to spare. I think everyone enjoyed working alone in the studio, having the opportunity to present ideas that may not work in a band setting.”

The new CD, a mix bag of R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop & Funk, also features vocalists Gwen “Gia3” Leathers and Genevieve Goings. Leathers, a voice instructor at the Berklee School of Music, has been working with Ruffner for several years both in Boston and at his studio on the seacoast. She has performed on stages all over the world, sharing mics with the likes of Natalie Cole and Nancy Wilson. Goings is a professional singer/songwriter/performer in Los Angeles who also tours the country with her children’s television program on the Disney Channel, “Choo-Choo Soul”.

“But let it be known, we’re definitely not making music for children," adds Gregoire, "this is for grown folks," alluding to the adult content, humor, and party vibe that seems to permeate most of the tracks. Standout cuts from the CD include “Flush”, an energetic romp with the irresistible hook “You’re Not Fu**in’ Pretty” (destined to become a novelty classic, if not a runaway pop smash) and “Filthy”, a funky cut that lives up to it’s title with raw social commentary on the current state of plastic pop culture America. Also check out "Roll Back", a beautiful breezy track with lush vocals from Leathers and smooth flows from stellar Press Project MC "B. Cap". In addition, "Daydream" oozes futuristic-retro-pop-funk, complete with an impassioned vocal from Genevieve.
