Saxman Lamb comes out like a lion - The Oregonian Review by marty Hughley, January 11, 2002

From the time he began making a name for himself in the Portland music scene more than a decade ago, saxophonist Patrick Lamb-just out of Oregon Episcopal School, fresh-faced, earnest, and ambitious- has explored a variety of styles. He''s worked on his straight-ahead jazz chops in quintets, jam sessions and the like. He''s worked with contemporary jazz star Tom Grant and veteran bluesman Norman Sylvester. He''s sung R&B.

The main direction of his career though, has been toward smooth jazz, which not only holds the best commercial prospects for a contemporary saxophonist but fits with Lamb''s crowd-leaser musical personality. But that genre never seemed to spur Lamb to develop his artistic voice beyond the polishing of surfaces; even his gutsiest blowing could come across as facile (as eveidenced on "The Closer I Get," his album from about a year ago).

But now out comes "Sunshine Alley," a bright, welcome sign that Lamb''s decade of hard work and eclecticism have really paid off.

Taking on the time-honored tradition of the organ trio, Lamb teams up with Hammond B3 player Louis Pain, best known for his work with Paul deLay''s great blues band, and completes the circle alternately with Mel Brown or Jason Carter on drums. Steeped in the soul-jazz approach of the 1960''s, this is music that proves you can be direct and accessible without ingratiating your way toward the lowest common denominator. And it takes advantage of the tonal warmth and openhearted phrasing at the same time that it pushes Lamb to dig a little deeper for the authentic expression.

Friday''s show to mark the album''s release should be a ray of sunshine for the soul. - Marty Hughley

Biography

Patrick is one of those extraordinary talents who combines raw talent, and energy with a singular ability to captivate an audience with his youthful charm, sincerity and pure magnetism. Although his influences in the past have been Jazz, he is currently crossing over as a recording artist and songwriter in a multitude of formats. His focus as both a songwriter and artist has become modern pop. He is currently combing the influences of funk, jazz, and modern pop to create the unique sound of the Patrick Lamb Band.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Patrick was playing roadhouse music as a teenager in rural Mississippi when he heard the evocative sounds of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Wilton Felder, of the Crusaders. He immersed himself in the music of these great artists and began to discover his own
sound that would end up taking him far. In the eighties his father, a high school science teacher, took the family out to Portland, Oregon. Once there, Patrick''s playing and singing were developing into a formidable one-two punch. He accepted the opportunity to perform and tour with GRP Recording Artist & Grammy-winner Diane Schuur. He did so for a period of time before meeting up with national recording artist, Tom Grant. He has recorded and toured worldwide with the Tom Grant band for the last several years.

Patrick is currently writing and working in the studio on his new album. He is co-writing with his long time friend Lee Garret, who co-wrote and performed with Stevie Wonder, and vocalist Debra Crowe. The new project will bring together his love of funk, R&B, and modern pop. Patrick recently describe his vision to producer John Linn, "I want the sound to be punchy, funky, and make people want to groove. " Other recording projects Patrick has appeared on include albums with Gino Vanelli, Jeff Lorber and other well known artists. Patrick is beginning to build a catalog of his own recordings. He has currently recorded three albums entitled: "For the Love," his debut solo release; "The Closer I Get," his newest release, and a holiday album "Home for the Holidays." Patrick''s growing popularity as an accomplished performing artist is making him in hot demand all over the nation. Besides personal appearances on TV shows, he is also an entertainment regular for corporate functions, events and festivals throughout the nation. Patrick will be releasing a new project in the first part of 2002, and will be touring in support of the project throughout the summer of 2002.

Patrick''s good looks and charisma make him well suited to speak and entertain on stage, radio and TV. In 1996 and 1997 he was invited to perform at the White House during the holiday Congressional VIP Tours and was in attendance at "The Peace on Earth Celebration," leading to a meeting with President Clinton.

Patrick also demonstrates a deep sense of community awareness and civic responsibility. He has performed for numerous fund-raisers to raise consciousness about the loss of funding for the arts in public schools. In addition, he has been involved with major civic efforts to raise
money for the America Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, Doernbecher Children''s Hospital, and the Richard Burdell ALS Foundation. One can''t help but be moved by the huge heart of this young man as it comes though in his civic awareness...and in his exuberant energy to entertain and uplift people. (Summer 2001)
