Papakoo''s music is extreme at times, but musically and stylistically diverse.
Papakoo covers a huge range of styles from two-piece acoustic, blissful ballads to the sounds of a hard rocking and pulsating full band.
Josh Halpern and Kwaku Aning have been playing music together for about 10 years. It all started back in 10th grade, playing in a few high school bands, getting involved with house parties and the battle of the bands. Papakoo''s original lineup was created in the fall of 1994, while they were in their sophomore year of college. Originally the band was called Attacist Troupe, which stuck for about 3 years. In this time, they would play shows sporadically here and there, traveling to Virginia and Boston, and playing shows in N.Y.C. and in their hometown of Suffern, N.Y. In the fall of 1997, the band changed its'' name to Papakoo, and recorded its'' debut CD, Raging Optimism, an amateur disc recorded in their drummer''s basement. The CD was then followed by a 2 ½ month span of playing 30 shows in the summer of 1998. They had now created a solid start to a following that would soon grow even bigger.
Starting in Sept. of 1999, Josh and Kwaku began the search for a new bassist and drummer. They went out to play acoustic shows, just so they can keep their name afloat. The show consists of Josh playing acoustic guitar and singing background vocals, and Kwaku belting out the lead vocals along with an acoustic guitar. The acoustic show has gotten so popular that it is now going to be part of their repertoire. They even released an acoustic CD, Without Fear of Intimacy, in the fall of 2000, which has been very successful. For something that started out to be a "Papakoo reminder", has turned out to become a quality and fun show to come out to, and participate in.
