The Purpose:
Sleepless Pilgrim is a musical project whose goal is the pursuit of truth.
Sleepless Pilgrim believes in absolute truth and desires to oppose relativism in all its forms, leading others to a better understanding of the world around us. In order to do this, Sleepless Pilgrim will explore truth by investigating themes that are relevant to our modern society. Sleepless Pilgrim also desires to counteract the many contradictions inherent to Modernity, offering clarity for those lost in the sea of ideas. Specifically, this project is for those in the university or college world, who have been taught to think critically, to question everything, but have not learned how to accept truths that can be trusted, since they have lost the ability to trust. Generally, though, Sleepless Pilgrim is for anyone who loves truth or is interested in gaining a perspective based on the reality of absolute truth.
The founder: Jason DeRoche
Jason DeRoche has a diploma in Jazz Performance from Mohawk College, Ontario and is in his fourth year of a BA(Honours) at Brock University in Liberal Studies and Classics. Jason is also working on an honours thesis, comparing a portion of the philosophies of Nietzche and Kierkegaard. To satisfy his degree requirements, Jason read many of the great works of literature, gaining an insight into human nature and the many intellectual periods of the Western World. What’s more, it is from his time at Brock that Jason attained the vision that is Sleepless Pilgrim.
A Note on Absolute Truth (AT):
In order for AT to exist, there must be an absolute authority who defines the foundation of AT. This cannot be found in humankind for one person’s opinion is just as valuable as the next, having nothing to raise him/her above humankind since he/she is only human. In the words of Socrates: “the wisdom of man is nothing.” Therefore, this authority can only be found in a being that transcends humankind. Sleepless Pilgrim believes that God is the only authority who can reveal AT, for God is truth. God has revealed his foundation for truth through the historical person of Jesus and the Bible, God’s word. However, truth is truth and as such it can be found in many works of literature. Therefore, Sleepless Pilgrim seeks to find truth in any great work of literature. Our method is simple: using the Bible as a foundation, we explore other works of literature to uncover truth that is relevant to our time and all of time, since truth is timeless and infinite.
The Sound:
Sleepless Pilgrim is a project that defies categorization. It is at once soulful, funky, jazzy and lyrical. Influenced by artists such as Steely Dan, Jamiroqaui, James Taylor and Phish, to name a few, Sleepless Pilgrim strives to make music that is both groovy and engaging. “Basically, I want our music to make people dance and think”, says founder Jason DeRoche. The Narrow Path EP is the first step in this direction. In making this project, Jason garnered the help of top-notch musicians to create the EP’s memorable sound. Look for a full length CD in the near future.
