Details:
J.-S. BACH did not compose for guitar, but the works chosen for this recording are all suited to the guitar, that is to say perfectly adaptable to the instrument, without any modification in comparison with the originals.
There are two original versions of the G MINOR SUITE. The first, the fifth suite for cello BWV 1011, was composed around 1720 in Coethen. The second, written after 1723 in Leipzig, was maybe written for harpsichord-lute, a keyboard instrument with gut strings, of which BACH owned two.
The PRELUDE IN C MINOR was originally for the lute and has been passed on to us in tablature by J.-P. Kellner.
The FUGUE IN G MINOR exists in three versions : a copy for lute in tablature (BWV 1000), a version for organ (BWV 539) and another for violin solo (Sonate BWV 1001).
The CHACONNE IN D MINOR, an ancient dance, maybe of Mexican origin, came from Spain at the beginning of the 18th century. Maybe this is why it sounds so good on the guitar, although it was written for violin solo (Partita BWV 1004).
At 18 years old, J.-S. BACH composed for harpsichord, a « Capriccio sur le départ de son frère bien-aimé » (BWV 992). The ADAGISSIMO (« Tous ses amis se lamentent »), part of it, concludes this recording.
