BIOGRAPHY

Born in Orange County, California, Joseph started listening to music at the age of 6, when his father gave him his first transistor radio. Glued to the radio night and day, he quickly developed a strong desire for music. By ear, he began mimicking many of the songs that would play.

At age 14, Joseph started playing by ear, on an old, dusty piano his family had. He loved the music of ‘Elton John’ and soon he was playing every song on the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ album; by ear. His mother, noticing he had a gift, gave him 6 months of lessons with a professional teacher who encouraged his talents to ‘play the music as he heard it’. In 1976, he took second place in San Diego at a piano recital for ‘Best Original Composition’.

By the time Joseph entered high school, his music teacher also noticed his ability to compose and arrange music and also play the piano by ear. So much so, that he was taken from the rest of the class and put in a practice room with a piano every day and told to compose an original piece as his semester grade year after year. By his junior year in High School, he formed his first Rock Band and titled it, ‘Titanic’ – which meant ‘huge’ to Joseph. They played the school dances, roller rinks and parks. When they would practice, in an upstairs warehouse, people would gather every week outside the practice area and park their cars to just to listen and ‘rock’ to JC’s music. At the age of 20, Joseph feeling empty and wanting his music to have more purpose, was led to the Lord by a Baptist preacher on the front steps of a church, one Sunday morning in Placerville, California. With a new purpose and reason for living, he wanted to sing about Jesus and the goodness of God. Joseph attended a country Gospel concert one night, and loved the group so much they asked him to finish the tour with him as a keyboardist and solo vocalist. The bands name was the ‘Waddington family’. Touring the United States with the Waddington’s was his first taste of real touring. They performed at churches, six nights a week and traveled out of 2 converted greyhound busses. By age 22, Joseph formed another original band, called, ‘Stronghold’ which lasted only a short while. He realized he could only justify playing music for God’s glory now and would never be able to return to secular music again.

Year after year, Joseph went on playing churches, and Gospel meetings around the country, singing songs by Chuck Girard, Andre Crouch, and Dallas Holm, as well as his own contemporary songs. People and Pastor’s alike noticed there was something ‘special and moving’ in his voice and songs. One day, his Pastor pulled him aside after church, and counseled him with these words, ‘You’re kind of an ‘Outlaw’ for the Lord, and you’ll only be able to play Gospel music. The Lord has put a gift in you, and you must fulfill your destiny by changing people’s lives with your music’.

Later in life while represented by Ace-In-The Hole Publishing, Joseph started pitching songs to other artists’ secular and Christian as well as trying to break in to the film-score business. His Publisher, Scott Teegarden, who also worked with the band, ‘Journey’, by playing bass on the ‘Raised on Radio’ album, he said to Joseph, ‘Your music sounds so much like ‘Journey’ already, that I’d like you to write 5 songs for the band to go on their final reunion album, ‘Trial by Fire’. Joseph wrote the songs and called it the ‘Golden Girl’ project, but was not able to fulfill the request because of a life threatening head injury sustained in a car accident, one day. In the late 1990’s, Joseph was hit by a drunk driver and sustained a concussion, that after a year, developed into a terminal form of meningitis that was decaying his nervous system and eventually would kill him. By the time, the Golden Girl songs were recorded, the Journey band was already mixing and music was the last thing on Joseph;s mind as he was fighting for his life. Seeking healing and medical care all over the country, Joseph’s only hope was prayer and a God who could heal. Through much prayer and the laying on of hands one night, Joseph was miraculously healed. The weeks following, his symptoms, sores, palsy, and seizures, completely disappeared. Unexplainable by doctors, Joseph was told he had a new lease on life and he would ‘treasure’ for the rest of his life. Now with a new outlook on such simple things as being able to play a piano, or walk without pain, his music took on a whole new realm of excitement and gratitude. He developed what many described as a (cry) in his voice, hauntingly resembling Steve Perry of Journey. The Lord spoke to Joseph in the night, ‘You finish the songs’, ‘You sing the songs, my son’, you can become the Christian form of Journey. Joseph knew that the people of the 80’s missed Steve Perry and now, some of Joseph’s biggest influences musically and vocally are Michael W Smith, Richard Marxx, Yanni, and the unforgettable, Steve Perry. Joseph had found his nitch with some ‘big shoes’ to fill. He began composing what would soon become the album, ‘Love Again’. Joseph and his wife, Linda, moved to a small mountain town and set his keyboard up in front of a window that overlooked the beautiful pine trees in Northern California. The Lord filled Joseph with inspiration, song after song, about Joseph’s life and how God had touched him and changed him were soon set to music. Some of his favorite songs are the melodic ballads, that closely resemble the Journey sound , which Joseph was so deeply influenced with. Joseph’s desire is to tour his music with what some people call, ‘a sound within a sound’ or miracle music.
