Over the last decade we''ve watched the music scene evolve so that audiences'' and musicians'' love of music is no longer constrained by genres. Pleasant Stitch''s experimentation with electronica provides that pleasure for the listeners. Their new EP "Capacitor" displays the power of a journey with synth pop, trip hop, heavy funk, jazz, and beyond- all working together to bring something no one of them alone musters.
Formed in late 1997 by three longtime friends (Bob, Will and Carty), they started with a simple enough concept: to ignore genres and simply create what felt best to all of them. Halfway through auditioning singers from a locally placed ad, they experienced Sarah-Jane Hill''s gorgeous singing and lyrics and knew instantly that she was the perfect fit for Pleasant Stitch. They set out to create their first full length CD over a period of six months. Through the combination of constant songwriting, improvisation, and experimentation in the studio and live - the self-titled full length was released just over two years later in early 2000.
The first CD resulted in a trail of live shows, televsion, and press reviews and interviews, and college radio charting (charting in the top 30 in at least 30 stations from Alaska to New Jersey). Their live events over the last three years have included three Future Perfect festivals, an "After Hours" at the Walker, countless regional shows and the NXNE in Toronto in 2001. Some other highlights were remixes of "Something Real" by Evan Olcott (12 Rods) and Monte Hilleman (MPLS Soul Sound), as well as work on three videos. January 2002 featured a college radio campaign, a winning of a section of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and the same month''s issue of international Electronic Musician magazine featured an interview. Through all of this, Pleasant Stitch was working steadily on the next release, "Capacitor."
Written, arranged, and recorded over a variety of studios and times, the 5 song EP features "Theme," the track originally written and released by Rites of Spring on Dischord in 1982. Pleasant Stitch also welcomed their musician friends in to add elements to the whole: drums by Tim Glenn on several tracks, the vocal goodness of Karen Kopacz on the title track, and the amazing turntable magic of Sam Quicksilver (aka MSNGR, and their soundman and confederate). The EP was dedicated to Sam who passed into the next realm in October 2002. In the planning for the CD release and the future of Pleasant Stitch, the planets aligned again and fantastic drummer and creative soul Robert Luna joined them. The result provides a new level of unity and energy both for live shows and in the work now underway for their next CD. As the songwriting, live shows, and recording progress - the group''s appreciation of the universe of music only expands.
