Details:
Somebody called me a Christian.

It wasn’t a compliment.

“I see you’re one of those Christian boys,” he said, his words delivered with undisguised contempt. He passionately argued that most, if not all of our country’s woes could be attributed to the narrow-minded, dogmatic, holier-than-thou political agenda of the religious right. He threw in a few historic atrocities for good measure – the crusades, the inquisition, the holocaust – all of which (he said) occurred because Christians foolishly thought they were carrying out the will of God.

It all made me a just a tad uncomfortable.

I suppose I could have countered that all he described has nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus or Christianity. I suppose I could have explained how much of what passes as religion is merely a vehicle for one group of people to take advantage of another. I should have explained that true Christianity has nothing to do with religious acts or zealous ritual. I’m convinced that none of us are capable of justifying ourselves before God. But we can acknowledge our depravity and place our trust in Jesus, who paid the penalty for every sin we have or will commit. I might have talked about the incredible experience of being reconciled to God through Christ’s finished work.

But when he finally stopped to take a breath, I just admitted “Yes, I am a Christian.”

He dismissed me with a derisive wave as he walked away.

But I couldn’t get his bitter words out of my head. It could be true, as my pastor points out, that the greatest obstacles to people finding Christ are Christians themselves.

I don’t want to be an obstacle.

I want people to come to know the Jesus I know. I want people to experience the love and fellowship that exist between those who are privileged to know God’s love. If I believe that Jesus has taken care of me, then I should be the kind of man who can put the needs of his brothers and sisters ahead of his own. It would be so great if people could look at my life and see a reflection of Christ.

I have a long way to go. But I’m working out my salvation with fear and trembling, trusting that God will work in me both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

I can believe.

Can you believe?
