This is a song that was introduced to me at a very young age… Mom would play it on our stereo annually, a tradition that was no doubt passed onto her by her own Mother. It would mark the fact that the holiday season was upon us, as I’d hear Mario Lanza’s voice fill the house.
I have loved ‘Guardian Angels’ since childhood… Mario Lanza’s rich voice, soaked with passion as he sang the words… It made me realize even then, with only my school choir experience, what it was to truly feel the words of a song, the power that words and emotion have, to move a listener. I looked forward to hearing that album placed on the record player every single year. We could faintly hear the scratches on the album, after being played so many times. Infact, I think Mom still has that album. It’s a part of our own history.
This song also reminds me of my Grandma, her love of music, how both she and my Mom passed this love onto me. How I wish my Grandma was still around to hear this version of it… She would be so very proud. I can see her in my mind, sitting in her room, her head tilted down a bit, bent elbow, with her hand gently placed near her mouth, her forefinger barely grazing her lips while she listens intently. No words would be needed afterwards. Her smile and tears would say it all.
I have to thank Yves Frulla for agreeing to do all of the music for this song. He works with a fellow Canadian chanteuse who has blown away all boundaries with her talent and to have the opportunity to work with him, that he’d take the time while traveling/touring… more so that he got WHY I wanted to do this song and emoted that in his orchestration. I am extremely humbled by his talent and passion for his craft. So easy going… loved working with him.
As I stated on the back of the CD jacket, I thought of so many people while singing these words. My Dad, Uncle Bill, Uncle Louis, Lorne, Grandma, as well as dear friends who have passed on before me; Lee Van Diver, you went far too soon before your time, you talented man… Amanda Hughes, David from Bute St, you cracked me up time and time again. I miss washing our cars together. Xo I want to mention as well, there are friends and family, my Mom that have my back on a daily basis… they’re guardian angels as well. I’ve truly been blessed in that department and forever grateful for their unconditional love.
I’ve always felt that I’m being watched over by someone… I know that for sure. And may this song help you believe that you too are not on your own. There is someone right now watching over you… nudging your mind to walk a different street, to slow down when driving, etc. Some may call it luck, intuition, whatever it may be. All I know is that we are not alone.
