Biography: Alice Bartels

Alice is a singer/songwriter often compared to Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams and Natalie Merchant. She’s a sensitive soul with a calming effect on you. Her unique outlook on life is the residual effect of her upbringing. “My father was a New York City police officer and my mother was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, so I understand the best and worst of both worlds. They married after 3 weeks in MS, where my father was briefly stationed after WWII. I grew up in N.J., only 18 miles from Manhattan; we were the only kids in the neighborhood who ate “strange” things like pimento cheese and corn fritters.”

Being the 7th of eight children, Alice grew up in a noisy, musical household, having 6 sisters and one brother. “My mother could play a mean boogie woogie piano; only as an adult did I realize how cool that was. With so many people living in our tiny house, I would often retreat to my room and try to find some peace and quiet, always finding comfort in writing. Some women like shoes, … I like notebooks and pens … can’t get enough of them!”
Alice’s early days were spent singing harmony in church with her sisters, and later went on to front several bands as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. “I played in all kinds of venues along the East Coast, from bars to churches; I even remember doing a concert for migrant workers on an onion farm in Warwick NY – that was interesting!”
She then married her husband, Per Granered, and had 3 children, moving her family to Nashville in 2002 to pursue songwriting full time. But as the saying goes, life is what happens while you’re making other plans. “Two of my children and I got Lyme disease from tick bites, and survival became the Soup De Jour; nothing but getting better mattered anymore”. The song “Carry Me” was born out of this long, hard ordeal and also from the experience of being with a friend as he passed away from cancer. It''s not a fun story, but it''s "my" story and I''ve come to embrace it, knowing a lot of good can come from bad things if we open ourselves up to God''s grace. I hope others, really anyone dealing with any difficult life circumstances, can find some validation of their feelings in the song. I am overwhelmingly grateful to God for our recovery, and I don’t take anything for granted. Music is an amazing vehicle for our feelings, which I am thankful to be a part of."
She is now fully immersed in the Nashville writing scene, and has released a 5 song EP entitled “Carry Me”, produced by Randy Stonehill, a veteran of Contemporary Christian Music. Mike Pachelli, Los Angeles studio owner and musician, along with Ronnie Ciago, percussionist were also “instrumental” in the making of this CD.
Alice continues to write and sing while raising a family and now has a ministry to people with Lyme Disease; “I want to pass on to others what it took me a 8 years to learn”. https://www.tradebit.com
