What started with an acoustic guitar and four-track ten years ago now sounds like a proper band: all ten of these songs feature drums, bass guitar, and multiple layers of electric and acoustic guitars. But more than the instrumentation, the lyrics and the tone of the songs has also changed. Whereas previous releases, like 2005’s Picking You Up Just to Put You Down, dealt with emotional heartache and sour relationships, the songs on This Didn’t Happen are more hopeful and mature. For instance, “Two Sides of a Sad Story” is about trying to see life from someone else’s point of view, and “Tired of Geniuses” takes artists to task for being great at art but not much else. The packaging is also more nuanced than past Player Hater CDs, with cover art that features an empty, dimly-lit restaurant. The photograph cuts two ways. Does it connote missed communication, specifically a dinner and night that never occurred? Or is the claim that This Didn’t Happen more a hope and after-the-fact oath, trying to drown a memory by wishing it away? In either event, these ten songs show that the pain of growing up is only equaled by the satisfaction of having finally grown.
