Gerry L. Wootson has been writing since the age of thirteen. He has overcome many obstacles in my life such as a learning disability discovered in the 2nd grade. It was there he was told that he would not be anybody nor amount to anything; He’d never read past a sixth grade level nor graduate from high school. Through hard work, determination, dedication, supportive parents, and unshakeable faith in God, he went on to defy the odds.
To write is his mandate from God. This year makes my 22nd year as a poet. From the first time he picked up a pen to write he knew it was a gift from God. Never would he imagine the magnitude of impact that poetry could have on one’s life. And that God wanted to use him in that capacity as a spearhead for deliverance, healing, empowerment, encouragement, and inspiration. What a mighty God we serve!

For so long these burdens I carried/Thought I would never get up/But all it took was the Master''s touch/Word out on the street/Is that I''m heading for defeat, defeat, defeat/But there is someone that I met that I want you to meet/Who can change your life just by the words He speaks/One day God spoke a word/In my spirit I received what I heard/So clear that anyone could hear it/But it was directed and reserved only for my spirit/He spoke a word to my self-esteem/And the self-confidence that it brings/Causing it to rise/Because I am the apple of His eye/His words canceled out what the devil prophesied/He revealed the truth and exposed the lies/He reached down from the pavilions of glory into the gutter in the muck and the mire/Proving that the devil is a liar/With this testimony I make a declaration far and near/By the grace and mercy of God I''m still here.
