Hello. My name is Priscilla Vanik. Thank you for your interest in checking out my music/profile. I consider my music to be eclectic. This probably stems from what I consider to be a diverse background with many levels of influence going back to my childhood. I performed in many musicals when I was a child and was frequently the lead in these productions. As a child & young adult I listened and was open to all types of music, and found something motivational about all types of musical creations. I lived in New York City for a few years & worked at a couple jazz clubs. This had a huge impression on me musically & in life. What really impacted me in this experience was the improvisational wonder. I never knew prior to these experiences that musicians in a professional paid upscale environment would actually improvise or make up music as they were going along during the show. After speaking with several jazz musicians & having some really fascinating conversations; I realized that because they know their instrument perfectly, understand structure implicitly, and have sharp listening skills & the ability to feel vibrations that they can do this. This experience gave me the courage to be more creative myself. It seemed to have lifted a fear which is the type that can restrict people from their creative channels. Since then I have been able to improvise more in musical jam sessions live and in the studio. Another large passion I found in my search for musical adventures was blues. I got into blues after I met a blues band & we went into the studio to record together. Their talent was ridiculous. They were able to quickly create music according to my composition and make a song
in less than an hour. A great moment in that experience was when we got all set up & I started playing my song & as they looked to me & my chords for guidance they were totally confused. The reason being because I play a guitar upside down/backwards as I am left handed & I don''t restring. So here are these 4 professional (of 20 years) men who were stumped for a moment because of this translation. I told them to look away and just listen as I knew that their talents are so supreme that they would be able to identify the chords I was playing & come up with their own creations by listening. This is exactly what they did. We recorded a blues song, a country rock style song & an instrumental jam together. And, they made sure not to look at me. Don''t you look at me there boy! Ha! Prior to this I did not think of blues as a venue to communicate my stories but found it to be perfect in many ways. Another superior influence for me musically is techno or electronica music. I have had nights in clubs listening to sounds that I believed truly opened up area''s of my brain I was not using. I am not sure I have used those parts since but I sure try. Ha! LOL! You always here that we only use a small fraction of our brain or what it is capable of. Really intense techno has made the connection between body and brain for me at moments when they seem unfamiliar with each other. Some of the sound combinations in this style of music really open me up emotionally as well. I think this is true for many people when they can''t help but be moved by these sounds. I learned in many of these musical environments that music can really heal the soul, open up the mind, & motivate. This is why I love it. I enjoy everything from Mozart to Metallica, from Brahms to The Beatles. Some of my favorite female influences are Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Sarah McLaughlin, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Madonna, Annie DeFranco, Tina Turner, Celine Dion, Heart, The Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Byork, Faith Hill, Chrissie Hynde, Natalie Merchant, Alanis Morissette, Indigo Girls, The Pretenders, Stevie Nicks, Enya, and many others.....the list goes on.
I am a huge fan of soundtrack/score composing. I love the epic classical sound that makes a moment. Our world just would not be the same without music.
My songs are the stories of my own soundtrack to my life. For me they are the musical pictures of moments in my life that were not or could not be captured with a photo.
My songs are stories about holding on, letting go, and letting loose. They are about reaction, hope, despair, love, loss, regret, reflection, and remorse. For the most part as a person I have worn my heart on my sleeve. I think the same goes for my tunes.
The bigger picture of my goal with music is to be able to use it to help out people in the future in some way that can make an impact. I hope to have a benefit concert one day which will provide funds for some cause that really makes a difference in our world. Happy listening.
