Details:
Boston-based all-star octet, Rocco and the Stompers, merges the traditional 1930''s Swing Era sound with contemporary arrangements and compositions. Formed in mid 2008, the group''s focus has been to actively write and arrange material that would lend itself to exciting live performances. With one sensational full length studio recording under their belts, the Stompers'' are quickly turning the heads of jazz audiences.

Collectively, the group has had the honor of sharing the stage with legends such as: Danilo Perez, Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Jazz Orchestra, Benny Golson, Dave Brubeck, Slide Hampton, Michel Camilo, Joe Lovano, Chick Corea and George Garzone to name a select few.


Danny Rocco Fratina – bandleader, composer, trumpeter.

Danny is the Musical Director of Rocco and the Stompers. As a composer, Danny was a finalist in the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards contest, and writes and arranges for the top New England bands, including the Beantown Swing Orchestra. In 2008, he was commissioned to compose a trumpet fanfare for the United Nations in Boston. As a trumpet player, he has performed all over New England and has been on NPR’s Toast of the Nation with Danilo Perez’s big band.

John Replogle – trumpeter.

John Replogle currently plays all over New England as a lead trumpeter for many artists including: Benny Golson, George Russell, George Garzone, Mulgrew Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tiger Okoshi, Victor Paz, Mr. Ho''s Orchestratika (The Live Esquivel Big Band), Jay and the Americans, Eugie Castillo, Andre Hayward, Robin McKelle, Kendrick Oliver, Tito Puente Junior, and many others. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the Panama Jazz Festival (playing with Danilo Perez’s band), Yokohama, Japan, and has played at every jazz club and venue in Boston and it’s surrounding area, including playing lead trumpet at Fenway Park for the national anthem three times. He currently studies at New England Conservatory on full scholarship and previously earned his Bachelors in Music at Berklee College of Music.


Mark Zaleski – alto saxophone, clarinet, soprano saxophone.

At the age of 18, woodwind specialist Mark Zaleski was selected to study at the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA, where he performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneanapolis, MN, Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, CA, and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. He has performed with Bennie Maupin, Christian McBride, Robin Eubanks, Ndagu Chancellor, Jethro Tull, and Dave Brubeck, to name a few big names. Now 23, Mark teaches at Quabbin Regional High School in Barre, MA and studies at New England Conservatory.

Chris Gagne – trombone.

Chris Gagne recently graduated with honors from the Berklee College of Music where he was on full scholarship and studied jazz performance and composition and is now studying for his graduate degree at the New England Conservatory on scholarship. Chris has been very active performing around Boston for over the past few years and has performed and/or recorded with the likes of Joe Lovano, Kevin Mahogany, George Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, Slide Hampton, Michel Camilo and Michelle N’Degeocello.

Ben Whiting – baritone saxophone, clarinet.

Ben Whiting is a baritone sax player from Boulder, Colorado. He is currently pursuing a degree in performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He has played in some of New England’s finest venues with a medley of different groups, from the Beantown Swing Orchestra to Weezer. Throughout his career, Ben has achieved many awards, as well as a scholarship to attend Berklee where he is in all the top ensembles.

Juan Andres Ospina – piano.

Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Juan has played and studied around the world, from Boston to Barcelona. He has played with names like John Taylor, Chano Dominguez, and Chick Corea. While a student at Berklee College of Music, Juan won many awards and had his compositions played regularly by the top ensembles as they traveled around the country. His piece “Tramontana” was chosen by the internationally acclaimed UMO Jazz Orchestra in Finland to be played at the Helsinki Jazz Festival. In 2007, he worked as an arranger for the Latin Grammy’s ceremony “Life Achievement Awards.” He currently writes, arranges, and performs all over Boston, New York City, and Colombia.

Katie Thiroux – bass, vocals.

Katie Thiroux is one of the first recipients of the Phil Ramone Presidential Scholarship at Berklee College of Music, a top honor at the school. She has performed several times at the IAJE conferences and for four years in a row, she was selected to be a member of the elite Gibson/Baldwin Grammy National Honor Jazz Ensemble. She has also received fellowships to the prestigious Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony and the Vail Jazz Festival. In 2005, she was awarded the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s “Shelly Manne New Talent Award” and in 2006, she also received the Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award for Outstanding Vocal Performance and Outstanding Bassist. Katie recently performed at the 50th Monterey Jazz Festival.

Matt Witek – drums.

Matt Witek, from Massena, NY recently graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Music Education Degree. Matt works with various jazz groups in the Boston and New York region, including the Beantown Swing Orchestra, and his group, Trio, has travelled around the world, playing jazz festivals in a dozen countries in nearly every continent.
