Slouching Towards Bethlehem is the third CD release from Robert James, a Singer/Songwriter/Multi-instrumentalist from Vancouver, Canada.
Released in December of 2008, this disc gets it''s title from the W. B. Yeats poem, although the ''Bethlehem'' that Robert refers to is the city in Pennsylvania, and largely due to a chance encounter with an American draft dodger named Jimmy Longneck.
Just shy of forty minutes in length, this ambitious ten-song outing opens with the gritty and pounding rocker Say Sorry, a story song based on events that unfold one evening at a local club. To say the situation gets out of hand is an understatement....... The clouds disappear with Wide Open. It catches you off guard with it''s summershine lyrics and power-pop muscle. AM radio would love to get it''s mitts on this number. Everything Under The Stars is all jangle and airy with hooks a-plenty and features Kevan Van Keith''s spoken vocal narration near the end of the track until Robert takes over with the signature outro solo. While Get Raw (midnight mix) is a bit of a departure with it''s trance-like groove and bass heavy vibe, it''s an amazing change up; Kevan''s drumming is rock solid while Mark Gordon''s bass lines are warm, full and spot on. Guest vocalist Meori works her magic well and adds a nice touch to this one.
Eighteen songs were recorded for the "Beth" sessions yet Heroine was included as only an afterthought and only because Robert was re-working the 1991 demo between takes at the studio one afternoon. He explains... "I''d always loved the lyrics and was messin'' about with it in Nashville tuning and Sid (Perez) walked in and heard it and got all loopy. He suggested drum lines, I suggested church bells and birds and that was it....... the church bells reminded me of this small village where I grew up and everything else just fell by the wayside that day."
Mine, Mine, Mine and In My Van are up-tempo rockers best served up in an open car, wind in your hair...all that. Fast moving songs for a fast moving car. Nothing (where''s jimmy longneck) is a story based on events that occurred during a summer long ago....and although the writing on the postcard has long since faded, it still bears the postmark as a testament to Jimmy and Bethlehem, PA.
There always seemed to be something going on at Robert''s place on any given weekend, and it was there I first heard Still...I Worry (snack song). A young lady kept asking him to "play the snack song" and soon it became a chant. Someone handed him his acoustic guitar, someone turned down the stereo and Robert played an amazingly extended version of the song you''re hearing now. Bootleg recordings are usually inferior, this one would''ve been great. You Gimme The Blues closes this disc and features the excellent patchwork guitar parts of Sid and Robert. Sid tackles the lead chores while Robert happily amuses himself with the other parts. When asked, he considers his outro solo his ultimate tribute to fellow guitarist Jimmy Page. Sixteen year-old singing sensation and label mate Emily Trann makes an impressive appearance and adds her sass as guest backing vocalist.
It''s what we expected ... another road to travel. It didn''t really matter if it was paved or not, all roads ... lead.
"With that little smirk of mine I wander down your street" ... Who''s he kidding ?... After all.......this is celebration.
