Details:
My name is Nat Hussey. Seaglass is a collection of 12 songs I wrote about the Maine islands and coast- mostly about my current home on Matinicus Island. These are songs about small moments and big drama, saltwater, salty characters, babies on the way, berry picking, it''s-too-early mornings, tenacious flowers of the shoreline, cold splashes, fishing, making do and living more with less.
Seaglass is also about recycling. Seaglass is trash that over time, and through the work of the ocean, becomes something of beauty. I have these song ideas, mundane things and profound things, that cycle around in my mind and then come out, hopefully as something meaningful. My musical gear fits with that motif as well. It’s almost all old, used stuff that was cheap to begin with. My studio looks like the musical version of the scenery from Sanford and Son; junky instruments and recording gear that if they’re put together right, sound pretty good.
I tell my story plus lots of made-up stuff about Maine through folk, rock and blues tunes. I write of haunted beaches, cheap thrills and the human spirit. I began on electric guitar around the same time as I was learning how to chuck hay bales and fix fences in Bowdoinham.
After many more years of outdoor labor, indoor education, countless bar gigs and a misbegotten 10 year stint litigating cases on behalf of indigent clients, I turned to writing down the songs that had been sifting out of these life experiences.
