BROOKLYN, NYC 2008:
After months of fevered creation in a frigid Bushwick basement an unassuming duo emerge into the light of an excited Brooklyn music scene wielding a buoyant set of oddly cut pop gems. Soon they''re taking up residence at their favorite club (Zebulon), breaking into the local DIY scene at all age shows, and playing infamous venues in the lower east side. Live shows find the duo tweaking home-grown beats and belting bright vocal harmonies while building shimmering walls of smart, soulful pop instrumentation that often necessitate switching instruments with drill team precision. Their sound gets nods to artists such as The Knife, Holy Fuck, Prince, The Postal Service, Junior Boys, The Sea and Cake, and PinBack.

In the spring of 2008 Dave and Earl begin an intensive 6 months of recording, song crafting, and experimentation in a closet-sized Greenpoint studio across the street from a fish smoking plant. The couple meticulously compose and record every instrument: Dave commanding guitars, horns, vocal harmonies, percussion, and a perfectionist''s ear for melody and orchestration, as Earl captains vocals, lyrics, bass, guitar, beats, and production. Any samples needed are made from scratch then tweaked and looped through drum machines. The resulting debut seamlessly weaves cunning pop songs into an undulating bed of beats and synth. Cascades of swirling keyboard, guitar and bass are infused with surreal narrative, psychoanalysis, mutinous diatribe, horn blasts, hand claps and hairpin turns of dense polyrhythm that take inspiration from a cornucopia of modern music including Bowie, Talking Heads, Studio 1 dub, Thelonious Monk, Fleetwood Mac, Mouse On Mars, and Stevie Wonder among others.

BIO:
David Bratton and Earl Muehlenbach hooked up amid the skunk-hazed house parties and basement shows of the
burgeoning Seattle DIY community in the late 1990''s with their band Wimbledon and with the Beep Repaired
Collective that sprang from it. In 2005 Earl released a solo CD as PlentyFace that was reviewed as one of the best DIY albums of the year by the Seattle PI while Dave toured with his spaz-art side project Pomeranian. Soon both realized that the brooding climate of the Northwest and its music clashed with their summer jam sensibilities. Their need for some musical sunshine would find them flipping coasts to new digs and a new band. Oars would soon be born in Brooklyn.
