MIDNIGHT SUN IS ON THE RISE
Hot on the heels of several prominent shows in Sonoma County, local favorites MIDNIGHT SUN are releasing their new album, Sunrise this December. Many bands have come and gone in the 10 years since they released their debut, Touch, but MIDNIGHT SUN continues to shine. A recent performance at Santa Rosa’s Wells Fargo Center for the Arts prompted KPFA disc jockey Rickey Vincent to proclaim, “You guys rocked last Friday night! Keep flying on!”
True to their tradition, this album blends a variety of styles from across the Caribbean: Calypso, Ska, Reggae and Soca (a contraction of Soul Calypso, an upbeat style of music from Trinidad and spearheaded by such groups as Arrow). The album plays like a tightly-rolled spliff with a few twists, notably the hip-hop influenced title track, and Shotgun, a Latin-rock riff to remind us that this is, after all, a California band.
