Details:
Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat have been singing together for over thirty years. Over the past thirty years they have amassed a very large and representative repertoire of songs from Europe and North America, especially of their native Canada. They are experts in traditional songs of BC. Since the mid-''sixties, they have been involved in every aspect of folk music, from collecting and academic publishing in folklore to educational work in schools and the organization of folk song societies and radio shows. They have sung at festivals, picket lines, rallies and demonstrations and have presented and published papers on people’s music. A major focus of their musical work has been the collection and dissemination of the people’s songs of BC. Jon has worked extensively with Phil Thomas on his collection of BC songs and is editor of the second edition of Songs of the Pacific Northwest. But they are, first and foremost, singers.

The songs they sing are about real people and real life -- traditional ballads and shanties and songs from Canadian lumber camps, American mining towns and the Australian outback. They are best known as singers of sea songs - forebitters and fo’c’sle songs about whaling and fishing, and the life and craft of the deep-sea sailor, as well as shanties, the work songs of the sea.

Since 1975, Jon and Rika have sung at folk festivals throughout North America, and have performed at concerts up and down the west coast and across Canada. They have taught aspects of folk music to students from kindergarten to graduate level. They are currently researching in the southern interior of BC, where they are founders of the Princeton Traditional Music Festival.

This CD is a sampling of traditional BC songs drawn from the PJ Thomas Collection. It includes songs from the gold rushes, the era of railway construction and the logging industry. Liner notes locate these songs’ origins.

Bartlett and Ruebsaat are heard often on CBC, notably regular appearances on “North by Northwest”, the weekend magazine show hosted in Vancouver, BC by Sheryl MacKay.

Their current project is collecting songs and poetry from southern BC mining towns. Their latest CD -- Now it’s Called Princeton: Songs and Poetry from the Upper Similkameen – was released in July 2008. It features material they have found in the local newspaper beginning in 1900. Further collecting will see the production of CD’s of material from the Boundary Country and the west and east Kootenays.
