“How do you explain a youngsta raised up by moms and pops--- that grew up into a gorilla serving crumbs and rocks? On the block with a glock, plus a beam and a mask….With a plot for the knot and a scheme for cash.” East Texas Rapper Bigface Pip has always been one to pose the difficult questions. Even if it meant earning the reputation for being a sarcastic, know-it-all with little respect for authority, and a smart mouth that might one day wind him up in serious trouble. Born January 25, 1981 in Longview, Texas, 27 year old Justin O’Ryan Pippins has grown accustomed to bucking the trends set by society, and venturing out to satisfy his own creative appetite. “I been going against the grain doing my own thang and tryna forge my own path since I was a little nigga, he explains. “I’ve always been into tryna do what made me happy and what interested me, even if it wasn’t the popular thing to do.” Although growing up in a middle class family that was stable in today’s climate, Pip would struggle to understand why he never gained the acceptance or approval of those close to him, despite being a very gifted and articulate young boy. “ I can remember before me and my older brother was even in school, we would be over my grandmother’s house all day and it wasn’t no cable t.v. or video games or nothing like that. We would be thumbing thru the bible and reading the newspaper like we were grown-ups. I guess that kind of sparked my interest in writing and literature and stuff like that. It was a gift, ya know?” By the time junior high started, Bigface Pip was garnering accolades from teachers and classmates who encouraged him to pursue writing or journalism more seriously. He would be entered in various UIL writing competitions where he was often times the only African American student in the creative writing division. He gradually expanded his craft from narratives to essays, poetry, and finally songwriting.“ I come from a very religious family and as far back as I can remember I’ve been listening to and singing hymns every Sunday at church. My family and my mother’s family and everybody is Church of Christ—(the same denomination as fellow Texas Rap legend Z-RO).—And our churches don’t use any instrumental music. So I developed a kind of sixth sense for how to shape and structure songs, like poems without having a beat to write to.” he says. His accapella days would be short lived, however, as he quickly developed an interest in playing instruments. “I was in the choir at church, and in the band at school where I learned to play the saxophone, and that was all I needed!” he announces. “I had officially caught the music bug…. It was a wrap.” he says. After a short stint as a member of a local R&B group, Bigface decided to venture out on his own and started crafting melodies with razor sharp lyrics. In 1999 he became one of the first artists in the East Texas areas to bless the streets with a full fledged hit song entitled “Texas Star”. He followed that up by spitting a heart felt sixteen on the song “Hustler’s Cry” which was performed by his former crew Seduction. The local radio station exposure had hustlers and thugs all over the Longview area giving props to the ex-poet. His next goal was to take his hustle to a bigger fan base. In 2001, Bigface Pip would link up with a small independent label out of Nacogdoches, TX in an attempt to further his reach. There was not a lot of money to be made in that situation, but the connections and knowledge he gained would prove to be priceless. “I was getting down with these cats called Bigg Grille Recordz, and I ain’t gonna lie, we was really grinding. We was opening up for niggas every other weekend that was coming down here from H-Town, and I felt like I could be in that same situation one day.” He explains. “One thing leads to another, and next thing you know I’m in Houston, San Antonio, Chorpus Christi, every weekend opening up and performing with South Park Mexican who at the time was a hot artist signed to a major.”(Universal Records/Dopehouse). What came next was a twist of fate that put the Longview rapper’s career on hold, and caused him to take a momentary detour thru the dope game. Bigface Pip enjoyed touring with S.P.M. and the Dopehouse Records family, working on his debut album, and learning the ups and downs of the music business. In October of 2002, S.P.M. released an installment of his Screwston series dedicated to the late https://www.tradebit.comew. The disk entitled “Purple Rain” featured a song called “We In This” where Bigface Pip does serious damage to the horn-filled instrumental. Unfortunately, the fruits of that huge accomplishment would be short lived due to a scandal that would send Carlos Coy (South Park Mexican) to jail with a 40 year sentence. “It was a trip, because I remember being in H-Town after we got on the CD, and we all was kicking it real big. People back home in the View (Longview) was trippin’ cuz I’m the first cat to make it on a Screwston mix-tape. Then, bam, look up and they say that nigga got a whole gang of time in the pen behind fuckin’ with little girls.” “That shit was wild, ya know what I’m sayin’ cuz I’m thinking my shot at making it just went out the window.” He states. “But actually it kind of gave me a chance to use what I had learned hustling music to elevate my game and concentrate on taking charge of my own issue. I made a promise at that point that I would never leave my career in another nigga hands ever again.” Then twenty-four year old Pip relocated back to Longview from Dallas, with one thing in mind. Get the money he would need to fund and establish his own record label and distribute his long awaited debut on his own. He would spend long nights in the Longview streets serving a potent concoction of crack cocaine that the Scenic Drive fiends referred to as “drop”. During the daylight hours, his partner in crime would alternate on the route, giving Bigface a chance to go to the studio while he saved up for his own equipment. After seeing many others small time dealers face indictments or end up dead, he finally had hustled up enough money to pay cash for what he calls a “slab” (Texas term for a big car) and funds for studio equipment. Long Money Texas Entertainment was born. With guest production from East Texas’ premier producer Kaoss Beats, Bigface Pip is set to finally explode on the southern music scene with the much anticipated album “Full Time Grind”. Fans can expect to hear a very sincere and deeply emotional rapper deliver dark tales of struggle and triumph, set to a superb soundtrack crafter almost exclusively by Kaoss Beats. Full Time Grind will deliver classic after classic, something that Bigface feels is missing in today’s industry. He is on a mission to prove that a southern artist can be as lyrical and as deep in content as anybody in the nation. But don’t get it twisted, this is Texas thru and thru. The gospel choir and R&B roots are evident in many of the heart felt tracks on the album, and the hit song “Paperchase” is sure to become every hustler’s theme song. Bigface also sheds light on the ways of phoney friends and acquaintances on the self produced track “Inconsistent Cats”. "Keep Ya Heat" and "Certified Dime" are also joints getting lots of attention. If you respect substance and lyrics that make you hit the rewind button, you will be hard pressed to find another up and coming artist bringing it to you on the level this young star is. The Fall of 2008 will give you a glimpse of what the future of Texas rap holds, and a peek at the inner thoughts of a lyrical prodigy. But nothing comes easy in the rap game or in this game called life. It is a Full Time Grind.
