BEATNAM VETS
Jonah and Joshua Vincent, better-known to hip-hop heads nationwide as the production duo Beatnam Vets, know a thing or two about beating the odds: the identical twins from Raleigh, North Carolina were born doing it. Literally. But if doubling-up on the genetic lottery was a stroke of pure luck for the Vincent brothers, what’s followed has been anything but.

As the Twins have found, good things always come in pairs. Take one part old-school inspiration. While still in their terrible twos, Jonah and Joshua discovered their love for organically produced music, vibing to the sounds of Count Basie and Curtis Mayfield that filled their home every night. The records of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations encouraged the young brothers to take up their own instruments and learn to compose their own music. Through years of practice and study, Joshua became a seasoned trombone player and fixture in North Carolina Central University’s famed Jazz Big Band; brother Jonah, meanwhile, grew into a trumpeter worthy of sharing the stage with Roy Hargrove sideman Antonio Hart and drummer Ed Thigpen of the Oscar Peterson trio.

Now mix that old-school inspiration with a heavy dose of new-school innovation. While the twins had one ear on vintage jazz, funk, and soul, they had another on hip-hop. Acts like A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Common, OutKast, and Goodie MoB added new dimensions to the twins’ musical perspective, amping-up their love for bass and rhythm and offering them a new, youthful voice. Using money they scraped-up from band performances and live gigs in New York and Los Angeles, the twins built a hip-hop studio in the basement of their Raleigh home and launched their own production company, The Beatnam Vets.

The Vets’ basement sessions ultimately yielded their first full-length, The R Album (CDBaby, 2005), an effort that combined the best of the twins’ old-school musical textures and new-school production techniques with the rhymes of Raleigh rapper Fred Solomon. As audiences around the nation soon discovered, these look-alikes had no sound-alikes. The buzz surrounding The R Album quickly spread beyond the Triangle, culminating with the Vets’ appearance on https://www.tradebit.com and their semi-finalist ranking in the Independent Music World Series.

Fortunately, the best things in life come around at least twice. This fall, the Vets are planning to release their second studio full-length, Kings Amongst Kings. With a few more years of hard work under their belts, the Vets promise an album that’s twice as intelligent, twice as intricate, twice as real, and twice as nice.

Those are odds to bank on.
