Becca Marlee is a 14 year old singer songwriter from Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. Her story is as touching as it is amazing. Becca started playing guitar at age 9 and wrote her first song by age 10. But it is at age seven that Becca’s story begins - - a sad and tragic story that no doubt laid the foundation for the emotion that is found in Becca’s music.
On May 11, 2001, Becca’s mother died suddenly and unexpectedly in her sleep of a heart arrhythmia. It was Mother’s Day weekend. Becca, who was in first grade at the time, was devastated by the loss. Just the night before, everything was fine. As always, Becca’s mom whispered “Sweet Dreams” to Becca as she drifted off to sleep. These would be the last words she would ever hear her mom speak.
Shortly after the death of her mother, Becca decided to take up guitar lessons. Her mom played guitar and used to sing songs to Becca as a young child. It wasn’t long until Becca wrote her first song. Becca found that writing and performing her original music was a way that she could express her feelings and emotions. One of the first songs she wrote, “Sweet Dreams” is written about her mother, the day she died, and the impact that her death has had on Becca’s life. When she performs this live, there is not a dry eye in the room - - even those that do not know Becca or her “story.”
Becca began performing live at the age of 10. The reaction to her music was absolutely amazing. Her songs are filled with stories of love and loss and heartache. The acoustic sound of her guitar, coupled with the youthful, yet mature lyrics of her songs remind people of a young Joni Mitchell. One listener once said this of Becca’s music - - “It’s Sheryl Crow meets Alanis Morissette meets Norah Jones”. WOW!
Becca has been lucky enough to have performed at various open-mic nights around the Philadelphia suburbs. She also has performed at coffee houses and other venues from Abington to Newtown.
Becca is in the 8th grade at Abington Junior High School and plans to pursue a college degree in Music and Songwriting. The music from her EP “Just a Few Bruises” was recorded at RML Studios in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania. The EP was produced by Ross M. Levy, who also happens to be Becca’s guitar instructor and musical inspiration.
