Before the Bomb

These guitar-and-voice songs and story-songs tell emotional, intimate tales, sung or spoken, about people coping with the need for human connection in their lives. There’s a shredding of suburban life in Suburban Boys; an encounter with a mysterious woman on a train, in Jessica; a mother who gives her son the “gift” of not being seen, in Invisible; a son dealing with his runaway father, in Listen; a worker puzzled by the sudden disappearance of a colleague, in These Days; a lover trying to relate with a difficult artist, in Shoes; the desire to be able to hold onto beautiful experiences, in Moments; and an urban “gospel” song, in Wings Like an Angel. The album title, “Before the Bomb,” reflects how music was mostly acoustic – but no more innocent – before the decision to use the atomic bomb to end World War II.

Brief bio

“Brother Greg” is a name I use partly to poke fun at my religious past—and partly to identify with anyone who has grown up feeling, since childhood, tortured by their religion. I had a spiritual experience while in high school. As one result, I majored in Religious Studies at Yale University and then earned a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. Finally, a few weeks before taking certain steps toward becoming ordained as a minister, I admitted to myself that I wasn’t sure about Christianity any more. I stepped away, and it was quite liberating. Since then, however, I’ve found that it’s not so easy to completely let go of something that deeply affected me for many years; it still haunts me in odd ways.

Meanwhile, I’ve been writing songs and story-songs, generally about odd people, whose stories say something about American culture. I like moments of “epiphany,” when there are sudden, emotional insights into what it means to feel alive. I used to perform in clubs in New York City (where I used to live), as well as in clubs and colleges in New England. An EP of mine received a lot of radio play for the story-song “Tattooed Rose,” and I co-wrote and performed a song used in a Travel Channel commercial for New Zealand a few years ago. I now live in Hawaii.
