The Recording:
Canyon Lifesongs is a rich sound tapestry of acoustic instruments, voice, and natural sounds. The "Rim Side" focuses upon Southwestern Canyonlands; the "River Side" upon adventures with waters of the west. The songs will make your spirit soar. From ballads to blues to instrumentals, the album is rich with flutes, strings, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as Rita''s strong vocals. In addition to members of the El Paso Symphony, she is accompanied by eagles, hawks, coyotes, canyon wrens, rivers, and wind, to name a few. This is an inspiring album of both strong and quiet songs that will seep into your mind''s ear and call you back to listen time after time.

The Artist:
Rita offers a flowing mix of original music in the acoustic folk, native American, traditional Appalachian, and blues and gospel traditions. Her haunting melodies and lyrics are powerfully blended with strong vocals, guitar, native drums and flutes, hammered and lap dulcimer, and occasional autoharp. The result: a rich sound journey into wild lands, gathering places, human faces, and the depths of your heart.

Her songs and stories celebrate culture, life, and the land, with rich imagery of rivers and mountains, ranches, cities, and haciendas. A presentation of Rita''s Lifesongs swings from tears to laughter, inviting folks to both join in and sit back, all the while re-discovering their own strong roots, dreams, and interconnections.

Rita has delighted audiences young and old from San Francisco to the East Coast, and has also traveled and lived abroad, performing for audiences in Canada, Spain and Australia. Her wide-ranged voice evokes the strong style of Joan Baez, and her themes and topics are as powerful, probing, and poetic. She is a captivating, fast-paced performer.

She has presented programs in national parks and forests across the country as part of her career. Her interpretive profession has focused around the integration of art and science, heart and head, intellect, and intuition, working with land management agencies, National Endowment for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Humanities. She has been a featured performer at various music festivals, schools and colleges, and at state and county fairs along the west coast. In July, 2005 Rita will entertain at the 2005 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall, in Washington D.C.

Rita has produced four full-length recordings of original music, and has written two books. She currently works with the USDA Forest Service and makes her home in Prescott, Arizona.
