As you likely know, Blues music has long informed the Jazz idiom. Tin Can Buddha brings a whole new meaning to the word improvisation; they turn it around and bring the best of Jazz improv to the Blues. Not a band, more of an art collective, they’ve been seen in recent years at the legendary Quilt Box in Louisville, a venue so intimate and with a clientele so attuned that the audience nearly breathes in unison.
At the core of this loose group of artists and musicians are Kentucky native Rodney Hatfield on vocals and harmonica (a celebrated artist formerly with The Hatfield Clan and The Metropolitan Blues All-Stars), and from Harrisburg PA, Lee Carroll on keyboards and Mitch Ivanoff (Central Pennsylvanias most respected interpreters of the blues) on vocals and guitars. At any time you’re likely to see several additional performers on stage.
Their music embraces a lifetime of influence; Chicago and Delta Blues, 60s Soul, Appalachian folk songs, Jazz, New Orleans R&B, Country, Black Gospel and Funk. The common thread to all they play is an honesty that only years of experience can bring, their music is spontaneous and a joy to witness.
The CD is the colaborative effort of artists and musicians, as much about the art as the music. The cover was designed by Lexington KY artist Lawrence Tarpey, cover photograph by Rick Bell of Louisville. The CD includes a booklet with 12 Rodney Hatfield prints.
