The Rocky Jr. Biography

Musician Rocky Jr. knew life''s stage was set the moment he first gripped a guitar.

"I picked it up in elementary school and just felt comfortable," says the sharp-dressed Latino music maker from Duncan, British Columbia. "From that instant I knew whatever I was doing in life, I was doing it with a guitar."

In 1995, at just 11 years old, Rocky Jr. began playing the music of blues legends Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker and Luther Allison by ear, amazing friends and family members who quickly decided he should be taking formal guitar lessons. Although the Milino family hired the best teacher they could find, everybody, including the teacher, soon found out just how talented a musician Rocky Jr. really is.

"Almost immediately after I showed him the basics Rocky and I just jammed," says Rocky Jr.''s ex-teacher and Deep Purple tributist Casey Sarter. "He could play everything I gave him with real imagination. He is just one of those rare talents I guess."

Already armed with classic influences as diverse as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Deep Purple to name a few, Rocky Jr. was drawn to the slick stage shows of innovators like Prince and Michael Jackson which sowed the seeds for his first live performance at 12 years old.

"Live shows are where it''s at," says Rocky Jr. with a sparkle in his eye. "Let''s face it, a guitar, especially a Fender Stratocastor, is the sexiest thing going. I saw what guys like Prince and Stevie were doing and even though I was just a kid, I knew I wanted to do it too."

Enticed by famed R&B piano player Al Forman to come to a local music haunt, Rocky Jr. played his first live gig in 1996 and was an instant hit with patrons and stunned local musicians. That night he went home and began composing ten new songs.

Rocky Jr. has been writing and performing original tunes ever since.

"Even then, I never really liked playing other peoples stuff as much as I liked playing my own," says Rocky Jr. "I definitely wanted the feeling of a live gig again, so I needed some material."

Released in 1998, his first album "Things I Can''t Have" shows amazing depth for a teenager and ironically reveals that when it comes to the guitar, there is no limit on what Rocky Jr. can or can''t have.

As a result of his first album''s success on radio stations like Vancouver''s Rock 101 FM, Rocky Jr. filmed a video for the title track that was shown extensively on Much Music and Black Entertainment Television (BET) Generalize. The popularity of both the album and video led to invitations to gigs across the West Coast for audiences ranging in size from 60 to a massive 60,000 in San Francisco''s Pac Bell Stadium.

Rocky Jr. is a regular at music venues around Canada and The United States and is continually brings down the house at parties held by the likes of actor and politician Arnold Schwartzenager and Major League Baseball MVP Barry Bonds.

In the year 2000, Rocky Jr. was recognized as a one-of-a-kind musician by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which chose him as one of five "Millennium Kids" from across Canada. The year-long search for the most talented young people across the country ended at Rocky Jr.''s door and brought his music even more television and radio time.

Rocky Jr. posseses some of life''s greatest gifts but is humble enough to realize just how fortunate he is. Rocky Jr. is the volunteer spokesperson for Protect Our Children, a charity group focused on improving the lives of children and teenagers who''ve been sexually abused or have substance addiction problems. He also supports the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig''s disease.

Constantly seeking to break new ground as a musician, Rocky Jr. joined ranks with vocalist Marytez to form the pop group New School in 2001. As a result of New School''s incredible talent, their song "Back In The Day" rose to #3 on music charts.

Rocky Jr. has learned the ups and downs of the music business from the inside out in the 10 years he''s honed his killer skills. His current album, in the works for over a year, is produced entirely independently.

"This time I wanted to have complete control over things," says Rocky Jr. "You take a look at guys like Prince, who I''m jammin'' all the time, and they are doing everything themselves. I feel and hear so much when it comes to music, I just want to be able to explore it all."

Rocky comes out swinging on the new album, doing everything from play his killer brand of guitar and rocking the drums, to engineering and crooning his own inspired lyrics in Spanish.

"I like to sing in Spanish more than I like to sing in English," says Rocky Jr. "Lets face it, Spanish is a much more romantic language than English and the ladies love it."

Cam Drew, the owner of 89.7 Sun FM on Vancouver Island is a big fan of Rocky Jr.''s new material, particularly the single "Just Think About It" which will enter into its regular play rotation in mid-September.

Kelowna just had a dose of the Rock Show, Rocky Jr''s latest and most inspired live performance, and "Just Think About It" is tearing up airways on 104.7 Power FM as well.

Rocky Jr. will soon play a series of shows in Mexico where his tunes are favorites on radio stations from Cancun to Mexico City. The latest Rocky Jr. CD will be released in Canada on October 29th during a huge Halloween party at the Vancouver Rowing Club. For now, however, Rocky Jr. is pumped to knock out Vancouver Island with the Rock Show October 2nd at the Cowichan Theatre.

"To date this is the best album I''ve done and I can''t wait to bust out the Rock Show on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver," says Rocky Jr. "All that I''ve put in it musically is guaranteed to come out and we''re going to blow people away with the live show."

Supplied with his guitar and all he''s learned in the biz, veteran musician Rocky Jr. is ready to rock n'' roll!
