Details:
A native of suburban St. Louis, I was introduced to rap music by my older brother--music that would become classic
in its genre; music that was happening in the late ''80s by
rappers like Afrika Bambaataa, Run-DMC, and Houdini; music that often featured self-conscious, isolationist lyrics that I could relate to as a young kid who had chronic medical problems and who was geographically isolated as an
African-American.
I moved to Northern California as a preteen, where I took up skateboarding, breakdancing, and formed a band called "The Third Degree" with a couple of my close friends.
As we matured and went our separate ways, our band no longer existed, but I still loved rap, music that encouraged me to enrichen the expression of my music.
Two big influences on my own style have been Twista and Big Pun, artists that can execute their rhymes with passion.
Like them, I want my audience not just to listen to my words but to feel them, as I do because my words are the instruments of my expression.
And with time, focus, and the ability to grow as an artist,
I will strive to become more successful in this genre--I intend to be able to move from underground hip-hop to commercial hip-hop to mellow hip-hop--an agility that I believe rap itself is already demonstrating in its drive toward the future.
