Balancing intricate counterpoints and sophisticated harmonies, the Rosette Guitar Duo creates an air of calm with their soothing melodies. Their sound is an eclectic merging of classical, world, jazz, and popular song that is fresh in its approach and intent.
Edmonton guitarists Kevin Marsh and Michael Lyngstad formed the Rosette Guitar Duo in the spring of 2001. Since then, they have toured Western Canada, appeared at the Medicine Hat International Jazz Festival, and appeared on Global, A-channel and Shaw television across the prairies. They have played numerous concerts and functions in Edmonton in collaboration with the Edmonton Classical Guitar Society, Global Visions, Change for Children, and other notable organizations.
The Duo has composed and recorded a full-length compact disc entitled "Portage to Tunnel Mountain", which was released in June of 2003. This album has received airplay and praise from CBC radio nationally among other local and international radio stations.
Kevin Marsh
Kevin is from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. His passion for guitar stretches extensively over an electic mix of genres with a strong commitment to classical guitar and the Rosette Guitar Duo. He began his musical studies over twenty years ago, and has studied performance at the Post-Secondary level at Concordia College and at the University of Alberta under Carl Lotsberg''s mentorship. He has also taught guitar performance for the past 12 years and is currently developing the curriculum for an arts college in Sherwood Park,Alberta. Kevin is the University''s premier graduate of the guitar performance program. He has won awards that include the Beryl Barns Memorial Award, the Rutherford Scholarship, and the Alberta Provincial Music Festival Solo Guitar Performance award. Kevin is highly accomplished and recognized as an invaluable asset to The Rosette Guitar Duo.
Mike Lyngstad
Music has been a way of life for Mike his whole life. From the days of emptying out the pots and pans drawer and beating out rhythms with chopsticks and playing basslines on the family organ to match what his parents would play on the keyboard to playing in various professional groups today, the language of music speaks to him above all others. From his musical beginnings in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Mike has moved on to study jazz performance at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. He completed his bachelor of music/bachelor of education degrees at the University of Alberta, where he studied guitar with the eminent Carl Lotsberg; as a mentor and friend who coached Mike in the fine aspects of playing the classical guitar. Since meeting Kevin Marsh in University in 1999, the two have played together in various ensembles, ultimately culminating in the creative force that is the Rosette Guitar Duo.
Mike continues to hone his improvisational skills at jazz, his songwriting in the pop and rock vein as well as contributing his time and talent to the development of new and artful music through the Rosette Guitar Duo. He fills his non musical time with riding his bike, stretching and meditating, and creating art.
