Rosita Stone - Biography

You know how sometimes you go out thinking you have a good idea what you''re in for, only to have your expectations turned upside-down, shaken around and completely exceeded?

That''s Rosita Stone, a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in fragments of broken mirror wrapped in a spicy enchilada. She''s Canuck multi-culti, being of Mexican-Russian descent - a Gypsy Aztec temple singer with a Tori Amos yen for turning stuff inside out.

A tireless self-starter, Rosita writes, arranges, and produces her material, keeping it exotic, erotic and spiritual. Critics have placed her sound somewhere between Enya and Shakira, although comparisons are somewhat dubious - she''s truly unique.

The essence of her music is emotional, the appeal universal, the delivery inclusive, evocative and unforgettable. As a songwriter, Rosita isn''t afraid to delve into the messiest of human emotions, and is able to turn out a lyric that is simultaneously poignant and vengeful. As a performer, she''s got watchability to the max - whether accompanying herself on guitar or piano or backed by a full band, you can''t take your eyes off her once she kicks into a song.

Rosita''s sound translates into vivid live performances. Nuanced, emotive vocals and savvy stagecraft are kicked up by dance segments that draw on her ethnic background, schooling in Middle Eastern moves, and childhood training with legendary "Solid Gold" choreographer Richard Rizzo. "I remember not having boobs yet and stuffing my bra to be in his shows and dance classes." After her tutelage with Rizzo, Rosita attended and graduated from the prestigious "Dupree Dance Academy" in Los Angeles.
Rosita has played Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Germany and the U.S., leaving them all wanting more. She''s a feature of the highly regarded "Jack the Ripper Show" in Toronto, and has performed at Canadian Music Week, the International Hispanic Fiesta, Mariposa Festival, International Acid Jazz Festival and Pride Day.
"One of the wildest times I''ve had was singing and performing on the main stage for Pride Day 2000 in Toronto, with thousands upon thousands of the happiest, coolest, strangest, freakiest, and friendliest people I''ve ever seen. Sharing the stage with Ani Difranco was very cool as well, singing to all those screaming lesbians!"

With a smouldering Gypsy biker-girl persona, you know she''d rule on TV and in film. Most memorably, she had a starring stint in the American TV Series FX in which she played "Chita Rojas", a feisty gun-slinging Puerto Rican. She can also be seen in the
video for "Get It Together", the first single off Seal''s self-titled 2003 album, and has lent her distinctive vocals to jingles for Coca-cola, Burger King and Sears.

Rosita broke through at the height of the acid jazz scene with Heavy Sex Vibe, a band that initially owed a lot to UK scenesters Brand New Heavies but ultimately created its own distinct sound. A trip to Egypt left her transformed by the magic ''n'' mysticism of that ancient motherland. Upon her return, their sound morphed from an exotic primal funk into an avant-garde mystical groove that made each Heavy Sex Vibe show a must-see event.

Elements of sensuality and spirituality continue to rub up against each other in Rosita''s current sound, as heard on her debut solo EP The Real Deal. According to former Iceberg Media top music producer/DJ Saint Pete, "Rosita''s always asked to sing on many different kinds of recordings because she''s such a vocal chameleon."

She''s worked with stellar producers Dave Hodge (Pop Stars, Jay Englishman), Bernie Cisternas (Glenn Lewis, 2 Rude), and Jorge Lopez (Linda Rondstat). When superstar D.J. and Perfecto/Mushroom Records boss Paul Oakenfold signed Toronto ambient band Mac 747, Rosita sang vocals on the first two singles.

Her track record includes a "Most Promising New Artist" from Streetsound Magazine, and a Top 10 dance hit in the U.K. and Canada with the single "Love On The Run". She''s been pressed by everybody from Entertainment Tonight Online and Reuters to The Toronto Star and NOW.

Rosita Stone''s debut EP The Real Deal serves up equal parts soul and spirituality, often in the same song. Whether it''s the wistful yearning of "Butterfly" or the slow-burning soul of "Anything It Takes", these tunes signal Rosita Stone is truly the real deal!
