Biography
Roddy Akers

My given name is actually Royce Akers, but my friends and family have always called me Roddy. "Country" would have been a much better middle name for me than Millard, but Mom insisted on naming me after my dad.

My family''s roots began in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Although I never met my grandfather, Guy Wilson Akers of Pulaski, Virginia, my father shared countless memories about my grandfather''s life. One of these stories was about my grandfather driving a taxi in his hometown to feed his family. Stories like this inspired me to write one of my first songs "Pennies from Pulaski".

My parents were in search of a "better" life when they moved to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Here I was born and raised on James Island, a suburb of Charleston. Many of my songs are based on personal life experiences here in the Lowcountry.; everything from country cookin'' to horseback riding and southern family life. "Missin'' my family" was written on my way home from work one afternoon. I was looking forward to an evening at home and I knew exactly what to expect when I walked in the door; questions from my son, questions from my daughter, and of course, questions from my wife. As I was driving along, words and melody just fell into place.

I like to write songs about life, love, women, God, heaven, and money or lack thereof. Some of my songs have a serious theme. "Tight Money" is a song about the struggles we all go through when we don''t have enough money. Working construction has put my family in a "Tight Money" situation more than I care to admit. Fortunately, I have an outlet playing with a local band and singing and song writing. Some of my other songs have a more humorous undertone. "Imaginary Girlfriend" talks about one of my favorite things to do "go out to an all-you-can-eat buffet". Family and friends continuously tease me about my passion for food.

The songs on Carolina City Life reflect experiences over the last 25 years of my life. The title track was my first song written in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was attending college and grew homesick for the Carolina City Life.

I plan to start work on a second cd by the end of this year. So keep your ears open for this Lowcountry shrimp and grits eatin'', horse-ridin'', singin'' cowboy!
