The roars of approval were undoubtedly hard earned as they tried to pedal hip-hop in a part of WNY mainly given to the croonings of boy bands and country singers. But such challenges only serve to validate their credibility. It could never be said that Dean Rogue and Croesus (born: Murphy and Christopher Tom) was a smoke screen act. They needn''t fear however, for such criticism eludes them as they unwittingly seem to be molding themselves into the next generation''s made-to-order icons of hip-hop.
But can the term hip-hop be used independently to describe the music of two young men who embody the unlikely combination of traits usually associated with the likes of Russel Simmons and Martin Lawrence? Perhaps not. Having been equally influenced by the urban American inventiveness that is hip-hop and the indigenous rhythms of their native island Trinidad, theirs is a blend of rap they sometimes jokingly refer to as "pot lock". Whatever the definition, it certainly compliments their versatility enabling them to go from a light performance like OutKast''s "Hey Ya" to an edgy bantering like DMX''s "Ruff Ryders Anthem" in seconds.
Demonstrating the kind of showmanship they themselves once ogled at when the likes of Michael Jackson and MC Hammer took the stage.... their performances are "a torrent of incessant hype" (Lisa Yohon Director of Campus Life Activities, Jamestown Community College, Olean).
From a journey that started with children too young to remember the first time they walked out on stage as part of their father''s cast (to them he was a "brilliant playwright") the lives of Dean Rogue and Croesus read like a Martin Scorsese screenplay.
Being a few years apart translates into independent musical backgrounds for the "Tom" boys.
Murphy (alias : Dean Rogue) the elder of the two, as a child, was bitten by the parodial musical bug after playing "Amazing Grace" on the flute to a standing ovation at the St. Benedicts R.C. church in 1984. It was a small spark but it was enough. A masterful rendition of MC Hammer''s "Can''t touch this" on national talent show Party Time in 1991, would be his first flirtation with hip-hop and would see him go on to excite, entice and sometimes even incite audiences across Trinidad. Producing, performing, directing, choreography....all soon became feathers in his cap.
Chris (alias : Croesus) would come into his own after the family migrated from the island of Trinidad to America in 1996 - leaving Murphy behind. Chris, like his brother, wasted no time - delving immediately into a tame form of hip-hop/gospel rap.
Two demos (introducing songs like "Situations" and "Hands up") and a string of performances from Buffalo to New York City anticipated Chris'' reunion with his brother in 2003. Together again, they recorded a demo and within a month headed down to L.A. with high hopes. There, their cousin (2004 Grammy Award winner - producer/engineer Dexter Simmons) would cut them to the quick with criticism meant to help them either elevate their game or give it up entirely. Since then they''ve become their own worst critics.
By January 2004 (having undergone some degree of re-invention) Dean Rogue and Croesus amassed a fan base of approximately four hundred and sixty-eight (468) loyals (an unprecedented achievement for hip-hop purveyors on a traditional Rock n'' Roll stomping ground) and still their popularity continues to grow. This of course is helped along by the experimental rotation their CD "Fo''get where ya mind at" has been getting on Olean''s WMXO mix 101.5 FM and The Rock (WQRT 98.3 FM) in Salamanca. The CD was released about two weeks after one hundred and sixty-one (161) fans braved freezing weather to catch a glimpse of Dean Rogue and Croesus in concert at JCC in Olean on Jan 23rd .
In just ten days (spread over the period of one month) from the release date all one thousand (1000) of the CD''s that were manufactured, were sold out.
Now as they continue to pedal a new batch of their CD''s feverishly, the remainder of their time is consumed with performing, securing regional gigs, acquiring a new sound system, experimenting with a publishing company, developing a web site and collaborating to conjure up new songs that demonstrate their continuous evolution.
As their press kit is directed into carefully selected hands.....they wait. Wait for a lifelong dream to come to fruition. Wait for a record deal that, in the minds of some enthusiastic friends and fans, they should already have.
All in all, unlike the street thugs and gangsters turned hip-hop artists after drug pedaling and grand theft failed - Dean Rogue and Croesus simply love the art form.
They are now and next ! They''re ready for the world and by all indications the world is ready for them.
NOTE: Look out for an all new CD being released in January 2005. It''s definitely going to set it off for these guys.
