Roots of Creation formed in late 1999 in the small southern New Hampshire towns of Hollis and Brookline. The premise of the original band has stayed the same throughout the years. Mix Reggae, funk, rock, and creative improvisational skills with spiritual socially conscious lyrics, and add songwriting that could stand easily on its own two feet and excellent musicianship and you have the R.O.C. sound. The band members have changed throughout the years but founding member Singer songwriter/lead guitarist Brett Wilson still remains.
The band slowly built up a steady loyal following in the New Hampshire area. First, they played at parties, then clubs, and then festivals. Fans drove 7 hours to see them play at the Hippie''s Ball in N.Y. When Brett went off to Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire, he turned on another completely new audience to the R.O.C. sound. There he met keyboardist Tal Pearson (Spider Gates, 8th Grade Rock) and drummer Mike Chadinha (Filasaphunk). They took it on the road out the famous Common Ground in Brattleboro, Vermont. More people started getting turned on and signing the mailing list. Things were really moving quickly. Then their Bassist left. R.O.C. tried out different bassists and finally decided on Bass extraordinaire Ian Stich (Something Good) touring and moving up to places like the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. They also recorded their first full-length album called "the end of the beginning" The end of the beginning marks an important step in the evolution of the band creatively, career wise, and musically. Not to mention that 3/4 of the members have relocated to the Boston area. Expect big things to come.
Over the years, Roots of Creation have been bringing their original sound to new ears. They have acquired quite a following in the jam band community. Their music crosses many boundaries which makes them accessible to a large demographic of music lovers. They have recently even included hip-hop, dancehall/dub reggae, and jazz into their eclectic but related book of sounds. If you were to go to a R.O.C show, you could spot fans wearing a Sublime shirt, a Rage Against the Machine shirt, a Phish or a Grateful Dead shirt all in the same room. You will would also witness an ecstatic audience dancing and singing along to their underground hits such as, "Another Song of Freedom", "One Volcano", and "Roots". The things that separate R.O.C from the rest of the jamband community are their dedication to excellent songwriting and a truly original sound. The things that connect them to the community are a penchant for improvisation and audience allowed taping of live shows. The lyrics speak to people and the music makes people move. What more could you ask for
