RUN SILENT RUN DEEP

Wow! That''s right, I started my review with an emphatic, "Wow!". This is a disc that demands attention and repeat listens. Why? Because there''s so much to like, to investigate and to love. You just can''t take it all in at once.

It''s almost impossible to compare this band''s sound to even a small handful of bands, let alone one musical influence. Each song has it''s own dynamic and diverse appeal. "Signs" made me think of both Bad Religion (the energy and pace) and Sonic Youth (the ominous tones and dark appeal).

"Overcome" is a mix of British-style balladry and early Nada Surf emo rock. "Color of A Bruise", my favorite of the eight tracks, again brings to mind Nada Surf - it''s the vocal style and the surf guitar - mixed with the emotional depth and drama of Radiohead.

Thomas Schantz has a voice that is best described as earnest. Add to this that he''s actually quite tuneful and accomplished vocally and you get an astounding vocal honesty, all the more appealing for it''s candor. "Rite To Know" showcases these honest, emotional vocals as well as a musical style that immediately had this reviewer yearning to give a listen to my old Catherine Wheel albums.

There''s a glimmer, just a glimmer, of "heard this before" ennui that sets in as the sixth track begins to spin. It''s negligible, but it kept this disc from getting a full "5" stars. The pace and unique sound return on the seventh track "Get Away", with the disc finishing up with the lush and lovely "Arrow", a heart tugger of a song.

Overall this is an honest, thoughtful and intelligent album created by musicians and vocalists possessed of vast talent and an inspired wisdom and creativity. It''s a disc that will stay in my "play often" rotation for some time to come.
