Australian coastal blues, roots, folk and rock

9 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Acoustic Blues, FOLK: Folk Pop

Details:
Ryan Toohey''s music is exciting blend of folk, blues, roots and rock that suits a night around a beachside campfire. The 19-year old musician from Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast uses acoustic guitar, slide guitar, djembe drums and didgeridoo in an infectious jam session. His songs reflect his coastal surroundings - the zest of saltwater is almost audible in his songs.

Ryan''s music ranges from rhythmic and driving to slow and melancholy. Half-way through his set Ryan flips his acoustic guitar over on his lap and pulls out a steel slide. The ensuing rock-blues slide guitar fusion immediately invokes a crowd reaction.

His musical heroes - Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Tex Perkins and Jeff Buckley - have influenced his sound. But Ryan doesn''t try to copy his influences, his music has a unique sound of its own.

He sings of love and desire, using upbeat and catchy riffs to draw the listener in and win them over with his voice. Ryan started performing just over a year ago, and has already won a small army of fans.

He plays regularly on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane , and regularly supports didgeridoo-bluesman Xavier Rudd at sold-out shows. He has also supported the likes of Dirty Lucy and iOTA, and has played at the West End Street Festival and the Rocket Festival in Brisbane
Ryan recently finished recording his debut album, Space In Your Stride , which will be released through MGM in February 2003. What started as a solo acoustic venture turned into a much richer album when percussionist Ant Watton came on board. Ant – another Caloundra musician - provided tribal beats on the djembe drum, which is particularly noticeable on the track Cotton Ball, a warm and catchy song with a killer guitar solo. Young didgeridoo player Chris Dullroy added spice to the track Clown Train Blues . Ryan''s vocal ability shines through on Late Night Lovers , a slide guitar track sung in haunting falsetto. Woman Stay Away bounces along. Lonely Stare finds Ryan writing about a friend''s anguish over losing his son in a divorce – “His sigh, his lonely stare, is now a part of him,” Ryan observes.
He talks about feeling trapped in his coastal existence on Stars Begin To Fade – “Same old circle, going around.” And the album''s title track carries a poignantly supplicant line – “Leave some space in your stride for me, and that''s where I''ll stay”.
The Sunshine Coast has for a long time had a reputation as a region where young people like nothing but punk. The emergence of roots artists such as Ryan shows the Coast is looking for a change.
"I''ve grown up here, so the whole coast lifestyle has influenced my music. People who are from the coast would respond to it.''''
