Scared Bunny - "Disturbia"
(Dovla Music 2003, R4B13 DOC)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Aural Innovations #24 (July 2003)

Scared Bunny is a solo project from Toronto musician and former guitarist of Preacher Hopkins'' Speed Disorder, Vlad Skokovich. Utilizing multiple layers of guitars and effects, along with electronic percussion, Skokovich weaves a tapestry of searing energy and dark, tasty moods on his all-instrumental solo debut. Influenced by German bands like Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra as well as Pink Floyd, Skokovich nonetheless sticks to his guitars, but uses the studio to create the effect of an entire band, including the kinds of electronic sounds his influences utilized.

Scared Bunny''s compositions delve into a wide range of styles and atmospheres, from the gentle and idyllic tracks Once Upon a Time..., Ghost of a River, and Never Mind, to the near metallic intensity of Neurotica and Bunny Chase. But whatever he''s playing, Skokovich always injects an element of strangeness into the sound, like the eerie wailing guitar that turns Bunny Chase into a frantic, fear tinged pursuit. Conrad''s Dance, with its heavily delayed guitar freak-outs is reminiscent of Manuel Gottsching''s Inventions for Electric Guitar, though it rocks a little faster and harder. Welcome to Disturbia is a moody rock track, with no little amount of queasy yet exhilarating paranoid feel to it. That same sensation is taken to its extreme with the disturbing, wailing guitar breaks and chilling percussion of the very appropriately titled Fear. In direct contrast is Lazy Joe, a laid back, swinging kind of summery jazz romp. Lucifer''s Cave is one of the darkest pieces on the album, and certainly the most experimental, with distorted percussive sounds blending with an eerie keening over weird noisescapes. Choke is melodic space rock at it''s best, with some truly scorching guitar work. The album ends, intriguingly, with the murky and mysterious Channeling, a rhythmless excursion of guitar drones, sobs, and moans.

Disturbia looks back on the past, but has a distinctly contemporary sound too: the sounds of the city and nature colliding. It''s music that inhabits the spaces between light and shadow, as the sunset burns the edges of the night

Breaking the Silence"

Interview to Vlad Skokovich

By Sergio Vilar, Nucleus Magazine (Argentina)

Vlad, how were Scared Bunny beginnings? Was there some previous project?
The Scared Bunny project began when my previous band Preacher Hopkins'' Speed Disorder broke up in 1999. I have to express myself trough music and I just had to do something. I couldnt just stop writing music, so I equipped myself with a modest home recording studio and started recording my ideas in the spring of 2000. Over the next 2 years I recorded over 30 songs. The 15 songs on "Disturbia" are the ones that survived selection.

Which is the reason of the name?
Well... I have always been attracted by the intruguing band names, by something out of the ordinary. I like strangeness, mistery and I am quite fond of surrealism in all its forms. I just thought it would reflect my music and my personality well. I hope it catches attention to my work... when I see strange band name I am automatically drawn to trying to hear their music as well.

Could you define from the musical thing to Scared Bunny?
Tough question... It is very very hard for me to see my own music the same way the listener does. I can only tell you in what way i see it... I see it as ambient instrumental rock music. I try to depict and convey emotion in my music... be it fear, joy or any other human emotion. I use my guitar to express the feelings I could not express in words or in any other way. I love music... all my life I''ve been immersed in it. Its a great mystery where it comes from. When I write music, theres almost nothing conscious about it. It just comes trough my fingers onto the guitar fretboard... its magic. I chose not to have any lyrics on this album because I wanted music to be in the forefront and to talk to the listener without words. I think thats where music is most powerful... I wanted to create some of that magic on my disc... did I succeed? Its not up to me to judge..I dont know, I cant know that... but I tried my best and i always will.

Which are the differences between this project and Preacher Hopkins'' Speed Disorder?
Preacher Hopkins'' Speed Disorder were a great crew. Ive spent some of best times of my life with those people. Music was very intense and strange, we never sounded like somebody else. That band was great. Unfortunately, people in the band did not see the big picture... great musicians, dear friends, but... they failed to be persistant enough and brave enough. The talent is not enough... its just the fondation that you have to build on for a long time, and in this business even then theres no guarantees that your efforts would be ever recognized. They got tired and disilussioned after we failed to get signed after just 3 years of being together. The music was not disimillar to the music on "Disturbia"... but it was more sum of its parts with each of the individuals in the band leaving their prints on the music. On "Disturbia" it just me... trying to give life to my music, to get people to hear it, and hopefully, like it.

"Disturbia" is a quite varied disk, musically speaking. Was something premeditated or did it arise spontaneously?
I dont belive in premediated things in any art form. Art is about feelings... how can you premediate your feelings? I like all kinds of music...all honest music is good in my opinion. My influences are extremely diverse and it simply shows in my work...there is no escaping that. "Disturbia" could be a great album or the worst you ever heard, but i guarantee at least it is honest. It is me on that disc.

Could you give me a brief description of each song of the album?
"Once Upon a Time" : I wanted this album to be a little story....not quite a concept album, but close. This is gentle intro to give the listener a false sense that "Disturbia" is quiet and peacefull place...
"Welcome To Disturbia" : once youre in... you realise that all is not that well. Like someone is following you... A slightly disturbing melodic rock.
"Conrad''s Dance" : some strange disturbians dancing to a strange beat and echoing guitars... kind of rock trance music.
"Neurotica" : you start to feel suspicious about this strange land... your heart races, you feel nervous. Heavy rock tune.
"Ghost of The River" : you see the river in the morning mist... you stop and sit on its banks... brings the ghost of the river of your childhood to your mind. Gentle idylic track.
"Vertigo" : sudenly you feel sick... but it comes and goes fast... Swirling space rock.
"Fear" : fear grips you... Intense psychodelic tune.
"Breaking the Chain" : you realise you want to run away... but cant get up... heavy guitar psychodelic rock.
"Bunny Chase" : youre finally up and running... like a scared bunny. Frantic mettalic song.
"Lazy Joe" Suddenly you are on the beach... are you dreaming? And what is the dream and what is reality? Relaxing jazzy rock.
"Lucifer''s Cave" : you wake up... in a horrible place... youre running trough the "Lucifer''s Cave". Intense psychodelia.
"Choke" : something caught you by the neck... are you dying? Creepy psychodelic rock.
"The Trip" : suddenly youre out... driving down the highway, free... still hounted by the memories of "Disturbia"... Driving hard rock.
"Never Mind" : You sit at home... safe... trying to forget all the fear and hurt... relaxing, slow song.
"Channeling" : but when you fall asleep... ghosts of "Disturbia" are still calling you... creepy ghost noises in the night.

What comments did it receive the album on the part of it criticizes it and does the one publish?
So far I am extremelly flattered and honoured by people''s reaction to the disc. I am very pleasantly surprised by all the attention.
Review published in Aural Innovatons magazine, about to be published in "Banzai" and "Cargos of Doom" magazines-all from USA.
And now, Nucleus...

At the moment you are working with new material for the next disk?
No, I am taking a bit of a break... after all this album was finished just 4 months ago. Im always working on new ideas though...

Can you be ahead how that new material will be?
Will be different than "Disturbia". There is many avenues i want to explore... rock music is so wonderfully wide and open to anything. Its no wonder it became the music of the world... its open to anything and everone on this planet. Wonderfull thing. I want to take advantage of that and use that bounty of influences to steer Scared Bunny in some new exciting and adventurous direction.

Do you have thought to publish a new album this year? Is there tentative date of edition?
I''ll start working on a new material after the New Year... wont be out probably until 2005. I like to take my time... I will probably start to do the live shows again... I miss that excitement of being on stage...

Thank you Vlad, would like you to add something to finish the interview?
I would like to thank you and your wonderful magazine for the attention. I hope your readers will enjoy the interview...
