Remember when rock ''n'' roll was fun? When you would wait all week just to go out on Friday night to your local hole-in-the-wall club to hang out, drink up and rock out? Well, THE SCRAGS do.
THE SCRAGS are a hard ''n'' heavy rock ''n'' roll band made up of veterans of the Philly indie rock scene dating back to the mid 1980''s. Together now for three years, THE SCRAGS have torn up stages and set crowds ablaze with their high energy, loud ''n'' live shows. Recent shows have seen THE SCRAGS opening up for such national acts as EASY ACTION, THE DWARVES, and GINA GERSHON with GIRLS AGAINST BOYS.
THE SCRAGS new album, "One With Everything", was recently released in the Summer of 2003 on local Philly label WonTon Records. "One With Everything" jumps off the stereo with song after song of distorted, psychedelic riff rawk and catchy-as-all-hell hooks and melodies. The band recorded with Brian McTear (who has also recorded and produced BURNING BRIDES, BIGGER LOVERS and CAPITOL YEARS) and the result was a wall of sonic sound, that B-I-G rock sound that is just missing in so much "Rock" music today.

The Scrags - One With Everything (WonTon)
As in most "music scenes," everybody who is anybody knows everybody else. In Philadelphia, the same story rings true: we all play shows together, screw each other, get fucked up together, fight with each other, break up, splinter off, form new bands together, and hopefully somewhere along the way
have some fun and actually make some cool music. The Scrags are proof positive of that last statement. Made up of lead singer William "Billy Taz" McGarvey (formerly of Philly legends the She-Males and Mama Volume), guitarist John Malloy (Suktub), bassist Rick Wright (Crankcase), and dummer Jeremy Sustare (Grisly Fiction, Suktub, Underagga); the Scrags have all been around the block more than a few times, paying their dues in full, and their debut album shows it in spades. One With Everything comes off like a mixture of early Soundgarden and one of my all time favorite overlooked bands, The Fluid. This is hard and heavy, distorted psychedelic riff rawk with catchy-as- all-hell-hooks-and-melodies. Brian McTear (who had recorded and produced such bands as locals-turned-international-touring-rock-band the Burning Brides) turned the knobs on this scorchin'' slab o'' sound and this album just has that B-I-G rock sound that is missing in so much music today. Nothing is compressed on any of the songs, it was just recorded live in a big room with some talented rockers who got chops and know how to play. ''Nuff Said. This is the best debut album I have heard from any Philly band in many a year.

THE SCRAGS are out of Phila and have a sleazy blues feel of pure nasty hard and heavy rock n roll that''s just killer. Well THE SCRAGS sound has that rock n roll heart with hints of punk, 60''s rock, garage rock as well as some loud amp shakin action.
But fans of punk/rock action like extreme, love/hate, buck cherry, bango tango, teenage frames, devil dogs, the real kids, the stones and the ilk will enjoy THE SCRAGS and get wild rock action as well.

I know this is gonna sound alarming to the 6,666 bands that have sent me their rekkids in the past few years and the 6,666 that are going to, but I never read press releases, man. If you hadda read endless accounts of how the Whatevers are ''breaking new ground'' and ''taking rock to the next level'' as much as I have, you''d feel the same way, believe me. But, I dunno, the Scrags don''t have nothin'' on their website, so I had to go digging through the trash for their hype sheet, just to figure out who they were. You know what that means? That means I actually care, baby. See, these rough n'' ready Philly riffmongers lay down a nasty enuff squall of bludgeoning meat rock here that I at least had to report on their hometown, in case yr ever in their neighborhood and need a good, walloping dose of rock. Me, I''ve been to Philly, and I ain''t going near the city of brotherly amputees and crack-fried street urchins again anytime soon, but I betcha these cats tear the ass right outta South street all the time. Stylistically, it''s tough-as-nails mustache rock, somewhere in the Monster Magnet-meets-Skynrd galaxy, only without leaning too heavily on either the drugbliss psychedelia or the flag wavin'' and make kickin''. Nope, the Scrags play it straight down the line, a sweaty biker bar band looking for trouble, and finding plenty of it. Highlights include the swaggering Pistols-meets-Cheap Trick-meets-Redd Kross-meets, I dunno, Spread Eagle or somebody, riff n'' roll anthem "I Feel Fine", the 70''s arena boogie rocker "In the Band", and the full-on powerrock chant-along closer "LoveMoneyPussy". But, you know, it''s all suitably bad ass, man.
I still don''t know what a "Scrag" is, but it don''t really matter, because I GET the Scrags just fine. It''s rock and roll, see? And ya LIKE rock n'' roll, don''t ya?

From the opening track, I knew they had it. The slight rhythm shift at the end of the already enticing "The High Kid" told me more than any 3-color promo sheet. It''s rock''n''roll for sure, and it''s a direct descendent of classic garage rock from the endlessly inspiring 1960''s. However, rather than paint the whole picture by numbers, and churn out derivative cookies cut from the same The Who/Nuggets-meets-power pop mold, The Scrags opt to write songs that take unexpected turns, swerve from dance-beat to dance-off-beat, and for the most part come off as a band that puts a lot of time and effort into the traditionally off-the-cuff "pure" rock''n''roll.
I can''t pinpoint what else is meshed into the Scraggy formula, but it''s something in the same ballpark as Redd Kross or the Posies (both notorious for being rock''n''roll/punk rooted bands while simultaneously being unabashed pop lovers).
"In The Band" and the aforementioned "The High Kid" are standouts, but overall this disc is pretty solid. Each song vibes well with one another, and they all have a distinct melodic familiarity. But there are enough a cool backing vocals, odd guitar jabs, and tempo changes to keep an ear perked.
At 8 songs, I can''t hardly call this a long-player. But hey, it''s quality over quantity this time around.

SCRAGS "One With Everything" (WonTon CD) Yea haha...we''ve all heard the zen master hot dog joke "make me one with everything". Well make if this is one with everything then gimmie two of the mofo''s. I like me some stoner rock, well actually I just like getting stoned, and I think these guys do as well. They seem to like their pop, and I hear a bit o'' MUDHONEY as well. I won''t throw out the obvious stoner rock comparison to MONSTER MAGNET but I hear some great make mixed in there. I even listened to the whole damn thing I didn''t skip any songs (if you''ve ever reviewed a bunch of records in one day you know what I mean). Thank god everything I got to review wasn''t crap, because I really needed to hear some rock n roll and this fits the bill. bb

A 5-piece Hard Rock band out of Philly with their 8-track debut after being together three years as The Scrags. All the members have tie-ins within the Philly scene since the 80''s an that alone proves they are seasoned veterans.
"One With Everything" is no-frills Rock ''n Roll; rowdy, loud and full of guitar crunch, distortion and soloing. The Scrags give me a weird audio vision of what would happen if you crossed the Rolling Stones with STP and The Who with a smidge of Hardcore/Punk influence. If you notice, alot of the newer bands coming out are resorting to the old style of Rock; examples would be White Stripes and The Darkness and it baffles me why kids would listen to these bands firt and not realize they need to head back to the roots of where this all began. Is it a matter of pride, self-esteem or pure embarrassment? No excuse to not check out what your parents listened to; you may be surprised of what you hear. The Scrags are definately one of those bands that showcase a love for the simple yet effective catchy hook and riff with no extra enhancements. Just pure, raw, emotional music the way it''s supposed to be played.

Eight mid-tempo rock songs with plenty of loud fuzzy guitars, gang vocals, busy arrangements, and of course a cowbell, is the quick way to describe this disk. Someone in this band is a big KISS fan. There''s also some Screaming Trees-ish stuff going on somewhere and, God bless them, the boys went and threw in some "Sympathy For The Devil" style "woo-woo''s" on one track. It''s good Rock and Roll, but it is not breaking down any barriers. - Roger
