Combining strong melodies, tight grooves, and soulful vocals, The Shuffle stepped onto the scene with a self-titled debut album in early 2003. Driven by deeply personal songwriting, The Shuffle has created a truly unique sound that transcends the standards of Rock, Blues, Soul, and Folk.
The pet project of vocalist and songwriter, Joe Basilo, it all began as Basilo was attempting to make what was originally slated to be his first solo album. He understood that his songs, though strong on their own, would never make it in the long run without a band element and broader instrumentation. "I came to the realization that singer/songwriters are easily pigeonholed and too often lumped together. There are certain rules that one almost has to follow in order to get respect, but I wanted my album to have much more than the typical, naked acoustic guitar flavor," Joe says. With a particular sound in his head, he set out to find a strong Organist, innovative Bassist and talented Percussionist to complement his bluesy style and smoky voice. Basilo knew it wasn''t going to be easy to turn this purely conceptual group into a reality.
Joe first enlisted Mike Horick, an old friend and talented Percussionist. Mike was recently coming out of a promising Rock project in Boston while attending Berklee College of Music. With his hands on the project, things began to roll. He and Joe found two Milwaukee area all-stars to complete the sound. Dave Gelting (Bass) and David Wake (Organ) are key members in two of the city''s most respected bands: The Danglers and Recycled Future, respectively. The four musicians quickly found a groove among themselves and the first incarnation of what promises to be an ever-evolving lineup for The Shuffle stepped into the studio. Released in January 2003 to rave reviews, the record is an indication of great things to come.
