The most fascinating aspect of Konflit Dramatik is its capacity for transforming itself without betrayal or denial of its roots. Constant mutation prevents this band from relaxing completely into the false security of formulaic composition. And clear-sightedness allows it to avoid self-caricature, to focus more clearly on self reinvention, to maintain the integrity of its own voice even as it explores new directions. After 10 years of creation, the group is at the top of its game, and partaking of the cup of life like never before. Yet, its voice and textures have never been as subtle. A successful connexion between integrity and impact.
Konflit dramatiK was born in Sudbury in 1997 when singer and keyboardist Christian Berthiaume and musician friends gave life to this group, and quickly stood out. Originally, the group revelled in rap and provocative hip hop. The charisma, defiance and confidence this band leader expresses created a mini-revolution in the relatively conservative Franco-Ontarian musical universe, and his political and social commitment remain a positive surprise.
The lineup quickly formed and stabilized around the equilibrium provided by its own creative universe. The strength of its compositions, the generosity of its live shows and the ardour of its musicians rallied thousands of young francophones across the country to the Konflit dramatiK cause. Curiously, they got their greatest satisfaction using street technology to put together video clips inspired by some of their rawest compositions. This is where the group really stood out from the crowd, with the improbable success on Musqiue Plus of the clip inspired by the cut entitled Fait à la maison. Konflit Dramatik realized this meant that the time for compromise had passed and that total creative freedom and exploration were to be their most valuable assets.
Christian and Josée flourished on the challenge of healing their wounds and transposing the musical essentials of Konflit dramatiK into vast, new, untamed regions. They could already count on their two newest members, younger yet, and with even broader horizons. Shawn Arseneau, bass guitarist and Cory Lalonde on drums.
The group withdrew to a quiet place, a old Sudbury morgue that the group had resuscitated and metamorphosed into a studio, where some astonishing music was born. The groups'' fans were startled by these brand new works - more modern, less disreputable, more precise and uninhibited - only to end up seduced by the band''s increased conviction…like a long-lost love who comes back enhanced and transformed by the passage of the years, and with whom we surprise ourselves by loving better than the first time.
