Details:
Background: "Tough Love" was Carl Schonbeck''s debut record released in the summer of 2004. Recorded in only ten days at Milan''s Jungle Sound Studios, it was produced by the legendary Scott Mathews (known for his production work with John Hiatt, Dick Dale and John Wesley Harding among others) and featured Milan studio legend Mauro Florean in the drummer''s seat. Schonbeck and Mathews handled the rest of the instruments and vocals. Schonbeck, an eclectic (and some might say eccentric) Boston-bred, Milan-based rock''n''roll singer-guitarist-songwriter influenced by Elvis Costello, The Beatles and Peter Case, had already written material for several local groups and an Italian television program when he decided to put out an album of his own in 2003. It was Mathews who convinced to go all out for his debut.
Sound & Style: “Tough Love” is a record that owes a great deal to the melodic, high-energy pop-rock of the late 1970s and 1980s both in its material and production values. Critics have compared the record to material by icons such as Costello, Squeeze, Nick Lowe and Joe Jackson, although there is also a tough, bluesy edge running through "Tough Love" that was foreign to most New Wave bands. Mojo magazine rock-critic Sylvie Simmons gave the record a thumbs up calling it “a fine, catchy piece of work with just the right attitude.”
Songs: “Tough Love” contains eleven songs and with the exception of the bossa-meets-Lou Reed tinged title track and "Hey Ronnie Lane" they are flat-out rockers. The record opens with a fine blast of vintage powerpop in “Sponge” and this is quickly followed by the revved-roots-rock of “Amateur Night” (which DJ Skippy the Lizard called one of the best free download tracks of 2006). Other standout tracks include the punky “Jack Webb” and the record''s “unofficial single” “Simona Surfs Nude”. This last track was the runner-up for best alternative-retro track at Independent Artist Community for 2007 and reached the top spot in the Broadjam punk charts in December of 2008.
