BEACH WALKER
Strolling along a soft, sandy shore has provided inspiration for countless people throughout the ages. Today those same feelings abound and are demonstrated in this eclectic assortment of original songs masterminded by Dr. Herb Silverstein.
While brainstorming, both Dr. Herb and Richard Drexler decided to add a new twist to this production and incorporated a variety of string techniques using LaRue Nickelson''s smooth guitar and a string quartet. The combined talents of top-flight musicians including Steve Moretti, LaRue Nickelson, Joel Spencer, and Jack Wilkins piece together this magic sand castle of sound.
A talented, budding composer, Herb Silverstein finds inspiration in beach walking among other activities, hence the title of this CD and a lively song, too. The haunting 9.11 was penned as the 11th song on the planned 9th CD. However, as time played its own historical tune, the moment that forever changed the history of this country slammed into being just a short time after this composition was written. Now a song with a double entendre, this 9.11 forever reminds listeners of a day steeped in history.
Each song was written and titled with a significance that is perhaps audible to the listener. So, sit back and enjoy again this gift of sound, and allow your imagination to stroll barefoot through the soft sand, as you become a beach walker.
HERB SILVERSTEIN, MD (piano)
An ear surgeon by day, a budding composer and pianist by night, Dr. Herb continues to build his sand castle, grain by grain as he creates musical gifts for all to hear. Each of his CDs is a way to bring awareness of the beauty of sound, and the reason for his fund-raising efforts. His hope is that someday research will find the answers to deafness and all will be able to enjoy these same sounds.

RICHARD DREXLER (bass)
World-class multi-instrumentalist, composer/arranger and producer, Richard Drexler grew up in a musical family and continues to travel the world demonstrating his talents with a high-ranking variety of artists. Most recently, he has toured with the Woody Herman orchestra, bassist Jeff Berlin and trombonist John Allred. His performance resume would take volumes to write but includes hundreds of other musicians, including Mel Torme, Nat Adderley, Tony Bennett, Kenny Drew Jr., Dave Liebman, and others listed on his web site.

Somewhere in his busy schedule he finds time to be a studio musician for a variety of styles ranging from salsa to avant-garde, and country & western to the thrash-metal group Saigon Kick. His unique bass style and fastidious taste for the best helped to masterfully engineer Beach Walker.
STEVE MORETTI (drums)
Two-time Grammy-award nominated drummer, Steve Moretti performs extensively throughout the country and is becoming one of the most sought-after young drummers because of his high energy and versatility. Moretti, with his driving force and authoritative command of his instrument can be seen most recently on tour with Toni Tennille (Captain and Tennille), Michael McDonald, Michael Feinstein, and Freda Payne, to name a few. Before the untimely passing of Rosemary Clooney, he toured frequently with her as the drummer for the Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack. He can be heard on four Concord Jazz labels releases - two of that same group, and two with Rosemary Clooney.
He has appeared live on many television shows including NBC Today, A&E Biography, and the Rosie O''Donnell Show, and has taped many others. Moretti''s honors include Outstanding Musician at the International Association of Jazz Educators conferences, and Best Overall Rhythm Section player at the Reno Jazz Festival.
The list of major jazz musicians with whom Steve has played could speak volumes and includes Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson, Mike Stern, Bob Mintzer and Louis Bellson. Moretti''s drumming styles also include rock, pop, Latin and classical and more. Paiste Cymbals, Aquarian Drum Heads, Audix Microphones, and Frith Sticks endorse him.
JACK WILKINS (saxophone & flute)
Jack Wilkins is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida. As Director of the Jazz Studies program, he teaches courses in jazz improvisation, styles and analysis, and jazz history, as well as applied jazz performance to seniors and those with graduate jazz studies majors. Wilkins has held faculty positions at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Appalachian State University, University of North Carolina and Indiana University.
He is an active performer including performances with such leading artists as Nat Adderley, J.J. Johnson, Bobby Shew, David Baker and others. He can be heard on CDs by the Chuck Owen Jazz Surge big band, and John Mellencamp (Scarecrow), to name a few.
Jack appears as a guest artist with a variety of professional and collegiate jazz bands, in solo recitals, jazz concerts, as a sideman and with his own groups. He is an active clinician and adjudicator for many high school and college jazz festivals in the USA, Canada, Russia and South Africa. In addition he has been a faculty member of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops for over 15 years, is a member of the International Association for Jazz Education Resource Team, and a Selmer Instrument Company Clinician.
Wilkin''s latest CD release, RIDGELINES, on ClaveBop Records features his original compositions and arrangements ranging from quartet to nonet configurations. RIDGELINES was selected as a feature on the JazzSouth Radio show, a syndicated program featuring many jazz artists that is aired on over 100 jazz radio programs throughout the USA and abroad.
LARUE NICKELSON (guitar)
LaRue Nickelson, a well-known jazz artist in the Tampa Bay area, teaches guitar at the University of South Florida in Tampa and Jeff Berlin''s Players School of Music in Safety Harbor. The LaRue Nickelson Trio has opened for many touring jazz artists and performs regularly in the region. Nickelson has several recordings to his credit both as a leader and a sideman. He has performed with a variety of leading artists including Jim Snidero, Bob Mintzer, Danny Gottlieb and John Fedchock. As a member of Chuck Owen''s RESURGENCE group, Mr. Nickelson was a performing artist at the 2000 International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New Orleans. He has also performed at the Clearwater Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, and throughout South Africa as a member of the University of South Florida JAZZTET - the premier performing group of the USF Jazz Program. He was the first runner-up in an international jazz guitar competition in Montreux, Switzerland. JOEL SPENCER (drums)
Joel Spencer ate, slept and drank drums from early childhood and knew that someday he "wanted to play the drums for a living...be famous playing the drums, and be rich from playing the drums..." With those lofty goals, he started at age 8 and by the time he was in 5th grade, he was an item, and felt "the stuff came really easily." Fortunately, from early childhood, his father stimulated his interest and both parents and relatives encouraged his talents.
He began listening to the Big Bands, then graduated to artists like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Haynes and others. Summer Music Camps filled his youthful days and gave him the opportunity to meet other interested players. A turning point in his life happened in the early 1970''s while a student at the University of Illinois. John Campbell was the kingpin in Joel''s new wheel of fortune. When Joel heard John play (he was playing piano and also the high hat with his left foot), Joe''s life would be forever changed. Since 1974, the two have been playing together. Ironically, Campbell also introduced Normal IL high school classmate Drexler to jazz and the bass.
The influence of Bill Evans, Miles Davis and John Coltrane can be heard in Joel''s impressive repertoire. He has performed with such leading artists as Sonny Stitt, Barry Harris, Chet Baker, Benny Golson and Hank Jones.
From house drummer at George''s in Chicago to working other Chicago venues such as the Jazz Showcase, Rick''s Café, and the Jazz Gallery, Joel''s life rolls on in its series of "dream gigs."
Is it castles in the sand? Does one need to be a Beach Walker to discover the beauty of sound - the sound of the surf, the sound of terns screaming overhead...the sound of music? No, but everyone can make a difference in that world, and with thoughtful philanthropy help provide answers to making sound a reality to those whose lives are steeped in silence.
