Smashula: four friends with interesting day jobs and offbeat power pop anthems.

In 2002, Edmonton-based filmmaker/actor/musician Clinton Carew forced his friend, Edmonton Journal columnist Mari Sasano to learn and then play bass in a band with him.

That band was Mr. Relaxer, which grew to include drummer Marek Tyler and guitar player/songwriter Kris Schindel. Mr. Relaxer’s self-titled E.P. charted at #6 on the local campus radio station, CJSR, as well as receiving airplay nationwide. One song, Apparently You’re Evil, was selected to be on the Ralph Nader Was Here CJSR compilation CD that year. Marek and Kris eventually left Edmonton, and so both Clinton and Mari were sad.

Years passed and lives grew busy, yet Clinton and Mari still wanted to have a band, so they invited singer/songwriter/Mari’s boyfriend Paul Bellows to contribute to a new band: Smashula!

Two weeks later, they played their first show at Edmonton’s famed Sidetrack Cafe with former Relaxer drummer Marek, who happened to be in town for Christmas. Sadly, he had to return to his new home in Victoria, so Clinton, Mari and Paul started looking for a permanent drummer.

About two months later, Paul (who makes the internet with his company, Yellow Pencil) was talking to his friend Heath Smith (who also makes the internet) when Heath confessed that he yearned to be in a band. Luckily, Heath is a drummer, and so he signed on, debuting at Smashula’s second show at the Velvet Underground.

Smashula made a 5 song EP in Nik 7''s parents'' living room in 2007 but never released it.

Later Heath got way too busy drawing tattoos, so he decided to quit the band. Fortunately, Smashula knew Stew Kirkwood who agreed to take Heath''s place.

After that they went to Stew''s studio, and recorded another 5 song EP, but didn''t release that one either.

In 2008 Smashula decided to release one or both of the recordings. After thinking about doing a double EP, they decided to make just one record. That way it''s simpler for everyone.

And now, they love each other more than ever.
