I think of songwriters as magicians, storytellers and entertainers who color the earth with sound. Their music is a link that connects us to one another throughout the world. They lift our spirit, make us sing, dance, cry and feel things that keep the humanity in all of us alive.
In addition to contemporary writers, I have great respect for the Gerswhins, Rodgers and Hart and the Motown writers. Their classic songs are timeless and have left an endearing imprint on the American songbook.
My first professional exposure to music was through a recording session invitation to Muscle Shoals Sound Recording Studios where artists like the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, the Eagles and Gerry Goffin recorded. That’s where I developed a serious interest in music. I loved the creation process. I wanted to be a songwriter.
After that, I followed the music. When I went to Memphis and the French Quarters in New Orleans, I immersed myself in the blues. Later I went to Nashville for exposure to country music and the recording industry. After seeing the Broadway show “Phantom of the Opera,” I started working in stage production. I was fascinated by how the power of music brought such grand drama to life. I worked on Jeckyl and Hyde starring Linda Eder, Grease and concerts headlined by Alanis Morisette, Kiss and Hootie and the Blowfish.
My Album, “Songs from My Garden,” is a multi genre album which includes Blues, Jazz, Rock, Ballads, Country, Swing, Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Celtic and Christmas Songs. I enjoy writing in multi genres because it takes me on a musical expedition that’s such a great adventure.
