In truly great songs, music and lyrics combine to tell a story in a unique and compelling fashion, and for most of the repertoire in the “Great American Songbook” the story being told is all about the drama of romantic love
Recently, though Carolyn became interested in repertoire that does not focus on the “boy meets girl” saga, and the idea for this CD was born.
It’s not that the songs recorded here are not about love; it’s that they are more about life and hope and friendship and faith than they are about “falling in love” or “being in love.” Rodgers and Hammerstein’s, “Getting to Know You” from the musical, “The King and I,” was sung by a teacher meeting her new students. Kent Hewitt’s, “Flow Like the River,” speaks to the role nature plays in inspiring and sustaining us. “Estate” is a paean to the lushness and beauty of the summer season. And Jobim’s “Waters of March” presents a series of “snapshots” of life in all its profundity and absurdity and messiness and joy.
Carolyn Hartsfield is a seasoned performer whose vocal stylings have been pleasing audiences in Connecticut since the mid-80''s. The rich, dark quality of her voice, the depth and breadth of her repertoire, and her sensitive approach to lyrics distinguish her among the talented vocalists working in Connecticut today. Carolyn is backed here by a stellar band: Kent Hewitt on piano, Jeff Fuller on bass, Ed Fast on drums, Norman Johnson on guitar, and Kirk Feather on sax and flute. Kent Hewitt also did the arrangements for the album and contributed his original song, “Flow Like the River.”
A North Carolina native, Carolyn pursued her musical career in North Carolina and Boston before coming to the Hartford area to attend the Hartt School of Music. During her years at Hartt, she performed with the Hartt Chorus and Chamber Singers in concerts with Hartt ensembles and with the Hartford Symphony. Carolyn now turns her skills to performance of jazz standards, drawing from the "American Songbook" for the basis of her repertoire and supplementing it with her interpretations of selections from blues, Latin jazz, and R&B.
Carolyn was the featured soloist with the Charlie Gigliotti Trio in a 2002 concert at Quinnipiac College as part of the Sonny Costanzo Concert Series.
